Byzantine Chant is the musical genre traditionally used in the Greek and Antiochian Orthodox Churches. In the Old World, these Churches offer formal musical training in Byzantine Chant -- in their own languages, of course (Greek or Arabic).
In many American parishes, those who know the Byzantine Chant melodies of the hymns can only sing the hymns in their Old World languages. Formal instruction in Byzantine Chant -- in English -- is available in only a few American cities. St. Louis is not one of them.
This Group comprises people who want to learn to sing Byzantine Chant in English, so that we can sing it in the services we attend at our own churches, here in the St. Louis Metro area.
A secondary goal, for some of us, is to be able to read the archaic musical notation still used in this genre.
We are using materials created and assembled by monastics in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, because their materials cover the widest group of hymns at this time.
