Discussion on Composition

Liz C has suggested this topic and, though we have done it in the past, it was a great success and led to some interesting discussions. Do you use any rules when formulating a new composition? What are those rules? Do they change over time? Are classical composition rules still relevant? Think of a painting which particularly appeals? What composition rules (if any) does it follow? Etc. etc.... Also, besides linear composition, there is colour composition and narrative composition. One school of thought is that composition is the art of directing the viewer through a painting/photograph. If so, why would this matter?

I was hoping to attend but jet lag got the better of me. It sounds as though it was a really good discussion. Perhaps this topic could be discussed again in the fall.

A fine chatting environment with knowing artists and a variation of opinions on a great subject. Once again "Art" won.

Brian, are you an Artist that composes Paintings akin a Musician or
do you find that composing Music and composing a Visual Art piece are quite different? Do you or for that matter any member in this group, also include angle, lighting,
movement (inside or outside of the painting or both) and colour as part of Composition,
while still addressing these components on their own while developing the piece of work? Thanks. (:

I understand Augustus. It should be an interesting evening. I'm looking forward to it.

Put me down as a "maybe" ... It all depends on whether I can get caught up on my school work or not!

Having composed pictures all my life, composition is totally instinctual. However, as I now learn and see more, I find that some compositions that I "knew" were not to my liking, have now become part of my second nature.

Possible homework assignment for each of us: Pick a favourite work (it could even be one of our own?) and do a compositional analysis of it. Point form stuff, not formal essays by any means

I usually default to the rule of thirds or golden ratio. It might be a good exercise for me to think outside the box.
