Art History Discussion: Abstract Expressionism

Let us gather to discussion Abstract Expressionism, its place in Art History and social history, how and why it was born, how it grew and developed, and what impact it had upon art. Some of the big figures of Abstract Expressionism that come to mind are Pollock, Rothko, Newman, Motherwell, and de Kooning, but some of us will surely bring more artists to the table. What impact has Abstract Expressionism had upon us personally? Who among our creators has tried painting in the style and spirit of Abstract Expression. Is it easier or more difficult? What can every painter today learn from this movement?

i thought it was great - the couple people at my end, we spent a little time talking computer apps as well as art; but I felt it went really well with 12 {I believe} people. Thanks for the welcoming spirit.

The discussions, meeting the participants and getting glimpses of some of the artists work was very worthwhile. Thanks for organizing it, and for the attendees participation.

Its all wild and wide open. The sky's the limit. The canvases are clear. The world is our oyster, so shucks, any pearls of wisdom will do. We don't need to stick to the Americans

Are we sticking with "Americans" or can the Canadian group of painters Eleven poke it's head in?

Since there is already 12 people (reservations made for 12) I shall sign up for another meetup - soon. Cheers!

Reservations made in my name for 12. 13 are signed up but there's always last minute cancellations and no-shows. They usually have the tables set aside from 5:30 so there's no trouble in arriving early to get eating out of the way, before we knuckle down to 'serious' art talk.

Eat, drink, and be merry as you are equally intellectual and artistic. Some of us are there by 6 and ordering dinner beforehand, but eating during the chat is to be commended.

I look forward to this evening. Can we order a dinner at the same time?

    June 11, 2014

  • Malcolm M.

Agreed, Pieta, patios are to be desired. I didn't know JBI had one.

Well this sounds like a good one! If it's a nice evening, let's see if we can get some tables out on the patio.
