Star and planet gazing!

Hello everyone,

We have another clear night that can go out, I know that it is a bit short notice but I've had to keep my eye on the weather just to make sure that it doesn't go and change on me!

On this night we won't be able to do any moon viewing but not to matter, there is still plenty of other things out there in the great wide cosmos to go and view. I'm not going to put up a list of everything tonight that we'll be looking at but as a short list.

1) Jupiter! I mean who doesn't want to see Jupiter and a few of its moons.
2) There are a few nebulas that are nice to look at, they aren't quite as nice as looking at them from a dark site but I guess there isn't much we can do about that being in Melbourne.
3) We will also be able to have a look at a few open and globular clusters, some of which are quite spectacular.
4) We'll also have the chance to look at a few multiple star systems. Although they may not look as spectacular as some of the other astronomical objects, it is just amazing that we can physically see two stars orbiting one another from our humble little planet.

On the night I'm going to be bringing 10L of chilled water, a whole bunch of cups :) I'll also be bringing down some finger food of sorts, buscuits and some dips and what not. It's not dinner or anything but it should help with some of the hunger as we're likely to be out there for a while :)

There will be a $10 fee that mostly just goes to cover the cost of Public Liability Insurnace.

If anyone has any questions just leave a message on meetup or I can be contacted directly at[masked]
Friday afternoon I'm going to send out a mass email with more specific directions as to where the event is going to be held, will contain a map to make it easier to find :)

Hello, just wondering when you are holding another star gazing night? I am hoping to take my boyfriend for his birthday in early march. We do not have any equipment however we are happy to pay any hire costs.

    Thanks,
    Ash

Hey Ashleigh, the star gazing nights are all pretty much weather dependent. I am thinking about organizing a last minute one this Saturday night but it all just depends on my Friday. Buying a property so I can't really make any commitments this week.

I wasn't able to make it as something came up unfortunately, hope everyone enjoyed it.

I'm planning to organize a small get together somewhere not too far from city or somewhere east or southeastern suburbs on a clear weekend night for stargazing. If anyone is interested, just message me.

Hi there Colin, what time do you think you will be out there till?

    February 8, 2013

    • Colin R.

I'll be out there for as long as people are interested. From past experience I would expect that to be until 11pm ish but I can go all night myself :)

I've just sent off an email with more information on how to find me at the place. Just one more quick message, I would definitely suggest getting something to eat before arriving :)

Hi mate, it sounds awesome, and i would love to come but i haven't attended so far cos i don't have my own transport. I live Werribee way & i'm happy to chip in for petrol if you know anyone in the group who'd be ok with me tagging alone. Cheers.
