Altona Dog Beach

  • Feb 15, 2014 · 12:15 PM

I have done this location once before and we all had fun! This time I have picked the tide for comming in. Low tide 9:47am, high tide 3:02pm.

Drive down Millers Road, turn left at Civic Parade, cross railway tracks, turn left onto Altona Road, cross canal, Past Sports Club then park.

Beach is between PA Reserve and Sports Club.Look at the Sports Club just to the right is a cricket field. (green arrow on map). I will be there at 12:15pm and stay there till 12:45pm, then I will go to the beach. I have a grey beard and own a White Boxer.

BYO drinks. There is no suitable dog friendly place within walking distance. Oopsy, I'll check out the Altona Sports Club and get back to you.

You may enjoy splashing in the water with your dogs so you may need a towel!

Caution!! The beach is "off lead" not the park. So keep the dogs on the lead till you get to the beach.

ps. if you bring a beach bag, the dogs use them in place of trees!

I arrived just after 1.00pm but couldn't find anyone from the Melbourne Dog Walkers group.Stayed and spoke to a few people but noone said they were aware of any Dog Walkers group being there.

Sorry that you missed us. Maybe you missed my comment about my grey beard and white Boxer.

Had a good day. I waited on the cricket pitch for 20 minutes then moved out onto the beach. I think we had about 15 people turn up.

I think that I was able to talk about three people into having a look at Melbourne Dog Walkers on Meetup!

When evryone started to move on I found a bunch of Boxers! The group is a facebook group called Boxers in Australia.

    Buster is exhausted.

Righto. Was thinking about it closer to the date but looks like someone has changed me to not going. Pretty rude, but sure...

    Enjoy everyone.

Thanks for telling us about Twanny. I haven't caught up with him for a while. Judging from the smile on his face, he is doing OK.

Go Twanny! What a great achievement!

Enjoy the walk guys! Thanks to Dave for hosting the event. Obviously anywhere the group goes, we need to take care of dangers in public places. It's the same everywhere! Anywhere we go we need to keep an eye on the ground for hazards, and the benefit of walking with a group of dog lovers, rather than alone, is that there are more watchful eyes on the ground and surroundings! Have a great walk, and thanks again to Dave for organisinf a great February meetup. Cheers, Kate xxx

I have also heard of Tiger snake sightings from another source. I am not keen on snakes so will bow out of this one.

    January 28, 2014

  • Steph

We might bow out yet actually. Will have to wait and see how it goes.
Saw two big tiger snakes on the path between the grass and beach on the weekend and a guy said one was on the cricket pitch bit.
Chatting to a Williamstown vet nurse friend after she tells me they're seeing a huge amount of bites from near the sports club this year. They live in all the scrub and the mice feasting on scraps from the sports club prove an excellent food source for them.
Will see how it goes in the next few weeks.
Not overly comfortable going back to that part knowing what I know now

I took the doggies twice last week to Altona. We swam next to the Yacht Club. No one there, it was lovely and the doggies loved it. I keep them on lead. I went to check out Burns Reserve, I was disgusted with all the dog poo there. We left. The second trip, we went early and swam at the normal beach and left before 10am. It was great. Hope to go back early sometime over this weekend. I will check out the other dog area when I do.

I just want to point out that I plan to meet on the Cricket field. Just past the Sports Club. I have moved the arrow twice now and it keeps going back up to the road. :(

A little further down (for everyone's future reference!) There's another big bit of beach and a huge off lead reserve at the end of the esplenade, DK Grant Reserve.

Sorry Steph, I didn't set the map up properly. Over near the Altona Sports Club. The green arrow pointing at the oval is where I want to meet. The Oval is on lead. DK Grant Reserve is a good spot though. We should do it one day.

      January 11, 2014

  • Steph

I'm pretty sure the reserve is off lead too, guys?
