DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition

  • May 4, 2014 · 10:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Only RSVP if you are genuinely interested in attending as no shows and late drop outs will be recorded.Turning up without RSVPing is inappropriate.

Please read the details below so you know what to expect (and what is expected of you).

The MFC enjoyed the Hollywood Costumes and Designing 007 James Bond exhibitions last year, so let's head to ACMI to check out DreamWorks Animation.

Date: Sunday 4 May 2014

Time: Meet by 10.15am for the 10.30am entry time.

Where: Meet at the Flinders Street entrance at the "acmi" signage (see photo below). Look out for the Meetup badge pinned to my bag. Please be on time as the group will go into the exhibition at 10.30am sharp. Latecomers will need to locate the group during or after the exhibition (where I'm assuming there will be a gift shop!).

Tickets: General Admission tickets are available via TicketMaster (with a $3.95 transaction fee) or at the ACMI Tickets & Information Desk. Tickets need to be purchased prior to the date via the link below.

http://www.ticketmaster.com.au/acmidreamworks

Ticket Price: Full $22.50; Concession $16.00; ACMI Member $14.00.

What to bring: your pre-purchased ticket and an open and cheery disposition! Please be mindful that this is a group activity, and it's not all about you.

Lunch: How about lunch at Beer DeLuxe at Federation Square after the exhibition? It's reasonably priced, and offers vegetarian and gluten free options (menu). Since I need to make a reservation, please answer the lunch question.

Synopsis: "From the award-winning studio that brought you the animated classics Shrek, Madagascar and the awesome Kung Fu Panda comes the biggest exhibition in ACMI's history - a world-first behind the scenes celebration of 20 years of DreamWorks Animation!

Featuring over 400 items including rare and never-before-seen concept drawings, models and original artworks, interviews and interactive displays from DreamWorks much-loved and favourite animated classics.

Take a fascinating and exciting journey from original sketches through to grumpy ogres and friendly dragons, and experience the extraordinary characters, stories and worlds created by DreamWorks' award-winning artists."

General notes: You don’t need to RSVP “no” if you don’t wish to attend my Meetups. As an Organiser I need to keep track of people who are attending, rather than people who are not coming. When you don’t respond, you are automatically considered a “no”. You can simply delete the Meetup invitations, or adjust your email settings in your profile if you wish to manage the emails you receive.

When you RSVP for my Meetups, there will be a question about whether you would like to join the group for lunch. Some people say yes to lunch and then change their mind or don’t show up, or they said no/don't respond and end up coming. Most of you do the right thing, but it's a challenge when venues are small or when I need to make reservations so please be respectful of the group and the venue. If your situation changes, could you please let me know asap. If you don't answer the lunch question when you RSVP, I'll assume you won't be joining us. "Maybe" (or synonyms of "maybe") will also be considered a "no".

Remember to bring cash (a range of $5s, $10s, $20s) as most restaurants doesn't split bills. After a small tip, left over money from our lunches will go towards MFC piggy bank which I keep (which in the past has contributed to the fee to maintain the group as well as for afternoon teas and Christmas lunch).

Even though this is an exhibition, our film rules apply. That is, you are expected to attend the exhibition with the group rather than just turn up for lunch. If you say yes to lunch, it is expected that you eat with the group. When a menu is available online, I suggest you check it before the Meetup rather than complain when we get to the restaurant. Sometimes we go to restaurants that don’t take reservations hence we need to wait for a table. If you are unwilling or unable to wait, it is best that you say no to lunch rather than complain.

Could you please update your RSVP if you are no longer able to come. Last minute drop outs on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and not showing up is not very nice, so please be considerate (I keep a list of offenders!).

Enjoyed it thoroughly, thanks for organising Karen. Loved the Dragon Ride, worth it just for that alone, let alone the rest. Blown away by the number of story boards per each movie, 100,000 for Kung Fu Panda alone. Stunning. Cheers Tess

The exhibition gave me a real appreciation of all the work that is required to produce an animated film. Not only am I in awe of the technology, but creating a story that appeal to younger audiences as well as adults is a true talent. Loved the dragon ride...even though it made me a little nauseous! Many thanks to members who attended, it was lovely to share the experience with you. Have a great week ahead and hope to see you soon :)

It was the Dreamworks view of animation and I was really happy to see some of the Aardman studio work for Chicken Run.

I could have spent hours with the storyboards, the orchestral scores and the Aardman veggie patch set.

I wish there was more on the casting process, and I know this sounds strange, editing & direction.

Thanks Karen for organising another great Sunday Film Club meetup!

Really enjoyed this exhibition, fascinating to see both the technical and creative aspects of making animation. Would love to see Pixar as well or more general evolution of animation over time, including my era!!

Interesting display of the DreamWorks collection., left wanting to see some of them so I suppose it achieved the distributor's objective.

Enjoyed seeing the exhibition, especially the Dragon IMAX-style clips, the "making of" clips and the experimentation with CGI. Thanks to Karen for organising and hope to see you all again soon :)

    Hello All

It’s Friday nag time! A reminder to update your rsvp if you don’t intend to come. The group shouldn't have to wait for you, and no shows AND late drop outs will be recorded (there is a spread sheet!)

Please meet at the ACMI sign on Flinders Street – there will be heaps of people at the entrance so it will be difficult to find the group if you wait there. It will be a cold morning (we’re expecting a top of 15*) so please be at the meeting spot by 10.15am so we can move inside promptly.

Reservations for lunch have been made for me, Annie, Deb, David, Denis, Heath, Helen, Julie, Karen, Neva, Philippa, Simon and Tess (13). The following people didn’t reply to the question or said “maybe/I’ll think about it” so no seats have been reserved for you: Andrew, Gumbycat, Jeremy, Kirk, Shelley, Shelley-Maree and Solomon +1 (refer to “General Notes”). Please let me know by COB Friday if you would like to join the group for lunch.

Remember to pre-purchase your ticket if you haven’t done so already. See you on Sunday!
