Monthly FMUG Meetup

October will be Scala month at MFUG.

Ken Scambler will introduce what makes Scala tick, and explain what an JVM-based FP/OO hybrid with a powerful type system brings to the party.

Starting in July a small team (3 Devs, 1 BA, 1 Tester) on the Australia Post Digital Mailbox has been putting together a Provider self servicing portal using Play 2.1 Scala. A major part of the portal is integrating web services.  Play provides an excellent API for web service access, and makes heavy use of scala.concurrent. Future to enable non blocking IO
Travis is going to walk through the code and architecture he has designed, for assembling and sequencing these web service calls using the play Json and WS APIs.

The doors to get into the office lock at 6pm. If you come later than that you'll need to give me a call on[masked] to let you in.

Thanks for coming everyone, that was fun! I promised that I'd link to an exemplary codebase with idiomatic Scala style -- I choose Precog: https://github.com/precog/platfo...

It's an analytical engine that was recently open sourced; the developers include some of the best known Scala programmers like Daniel Spiewak, Miles Sabin, Brian McKenna (puffnfresh) and others. If that code's no good, then there's no hope for any of us.

Happy to answer any questions you like - ping me at $firstname.$[masked], or @KenScambler, or join us at https://groups.google.com/forum/... -- there's a few senior Scala guys subscribed from Typesafe and around Australia, so you're bound to get some sensible answers.

For the interested, the next MSUG meetup is Monday October 28, kindly hosted by PlayUp in Flinders St. Bryan Murphy will present:

"Iteratees: a look at what they are and how the Play Framework has integrated them with Futures to enable a reactive way of dealing with streaming data."

Don't miss Travis next month here at MFUG, with real world Scala experiences at Australia Post!

Thanks again Ken, great talk. I don't think I'm convinced on the marriage of OO and FP, but you've definitely inspired me to try it out for myself.

I'll take SICP if no-one else wants it. Always wanted a hard copy of this classic.

I might give a lightning presentation on controlling Ableton with a launchpad and Functional Programming (tm).
