I've been soaking in an information and knowledge career for 30 years. I'm an independent practitioner in Web, Information and Knowledge. I have a passion for Intranets and improving the User Experience of SharePoint (we all know it needs it!).

How do you feel a lack of knowledge management impacts the organisation?

The Carnegie quote says it all for me: "The only irreplaceable capital an organization possesses is the knowledge and ability of its people. The productivity of that capital depends on how effectively people share their competence with those who can use it." Poor knowledge practices ensures: there is a lack of foundation for good knowledge-sharing for relationships building, the constant reinvention of wheels, loss of corporate knowledge, and diminished decision-making capability.

What constitutes good Knowledge Management practice in your eyes?

The tools may have changed over the years, but the principles remain strong. We often get bogged down with the notion of "management" and leave the important message of "knowledge" out of the equation. Always seek to understand the context of knowledge within the organisation, and then understand the human interaction component. Problem before solution.
