Shark Diving & Swimming with Sea Lions in Port Lincoln

Hi Everyone,

THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH ADDITIONAL DETAILS. ALL DIVES ARE NOW CONFIRMED AS GOING AHEAD

I am planning a dive group weekend away trip to go cage diving with Great White Sharks and swimming with Sea Lions in Port Lincoln. This is something I have wanted to do for a while and various people in the group have also expressed an interest. You do not have to be a qualified diver to take part in either of the activities and in fact it is possible to just stay on the boat and observe the animals without getting wet. This means that non diving partners are welcome to come along. The water will not be that warm in May, with a sea temperature of between 14 degrees and 16 degrees. Calypso charters provides you will full kit including 7mm wetsuits.

One thing that I need to point out is that you are not guaranteed to see Great Whites. However, if you look at the Calypso website you can see that they almost always do.

The trip will involve taking a half day off work on the Friday. The itinerary would be as follows:

3rd May 2013 - Flight from Melbourne Airport leaving at 2:05PM and landing in Port Lincoln at 5.55PM

4th May – Shark Diving with Calypso Tours. It is a 6.20AM start

5th May – Snorkelling with Sea Lions in the morning with an 8.00AM start. We then depart Port Lincoln at 6.20PM and arrive back in Melbourne at 9.35PM

Obviously, you may choose to travel down/back on different days so you can spend some more time in either Port Lincoln or Adelaide.

The charter we would go with is Calypso Shark Diving Tours.

http://www.sharkcagediving.com.au/

May is a great month to go as they saw sharks on every charter they ran in 2011/2012.

The charter boat sounds great, it is large and they have warm showers and comfortable indoor areas.

The Sea Lion Charter is also run by Calypso. They guarantee that you will see Sea Lions

Accommodation

There are various accommodation options in Port Lincoln. The Port Lincoln Hotel provided me with the following

  • Town View room $130 per night – room only or $170 incl. full buffet breakfast for 2 in Sarins Restaurant. ($150 BB for single occupancy) - 15 rooms left
  • Ocean View Balcony room $165 per night – room only or $205 incl. full buffet breakfast for 2 in Sarins Restaurant. ($185 BB for single occupancy) - 30 Rooms left
  • Deluxe Spa Suite $190 per night – room only or $230 incl. full buffet breakfast for 2 in Sarins Restaurant. ($210 BB for single occupancy)

There is also a backpackers in Port Lincoln that offers cheaper rooms. They have a deal with Calypso charters which offers discounts if you are going on a Shark charter.

So far, everyone going on the trip has chosen to stay in the Backpackers

I paid $156 for a private double room for two nights.

You can find more information about the Backpackers at http://www3.yha.com.au/Hostels/SA/Eyre-Peninsula/Port-Lincoln-YHA/ and if you want to ask questions or book a room you can contact Debi on[masked] 090.

Both the Backpackers and the Port Lincoln Hotel provide you with a free transfer to/from the harbor

Total Costs

This will not be a particularly cheap weekend, but it should be worth it!

Flights – currently Qantas have return flights for approx. $374

Shark diving is $495

Sea Lions swimming is $203

Accommodation costs are listed above

Booking

Both the Shark Dive and the Sea Lion Dive will definitely be going ahead.

However, if you want to attend the trip you will need to book your places yourself directly with Calypso and the hotel/backpackers.

You can pay a deposit for the Shark Diving/Sea Lion charter to secure your spots on the boat and then pay the balance on arrival. The youth hostel does not require a down payment to reserve a room.

I also suggest booking Qantas flights now whilst they are still cheap. The evening flight out is already starting to fill up.

Let me know if you are interested in attending (by hitting ‘I will attend’) and I will get in contact with you directly. I am on[masked] if you have any questions

Cheers

Jon

    Hi All,

    Apologies for further inbox clogging...

That's me booked onto the Sea Lions as well, with Calypso, and I've decided to go for a cheap 'n' cheerful motel that's not far from the hostel, to stay in. I guess I might have to taxi it between there and Calypso's wharf, as I don't have any transfer arrangements with my accommodation, but we can figure that out at the time.

I usually just get Skybus to/from Tullamarine, as it's easy enough for me to get to Southern Cross, but if anyone was thinking of indulging in a taxi from the City (or nearby) to the Airport, 3 people sharing makes a taxi cheaper than the bus (and 2 sharing is usually enough to make it worthwhile too, for the convenience), so let me know and we can save a bit on fares.

    Cheers,

    Bruce.

i havent decided yet but I may drive to the airport and use long term parking. That is often cheaper for me that 2 taxi fares. if I do this, if anyone wants to get to kensington station or macauley station, then I am happy to give people a lift. i;ll let you know when I know!

We will be heading in from Port Melbourne. Bruce- think you are South Melbourne? If so, are you OK swinging past our place on the way to the airport and we can share the cabfare?

    Hi Jon/All,

I just want to make sure I'm booking the right things...

I called Calypso (http://www.sharkcagediving.com.au/ -[masked]) and have booked the Shark Dive/Swim for Sat May 4th for $495.

I think that's all good - and is what you've booked. Yes?

But when I then asked them, Calpyso, about the Sea Lions, they said it would be $150 (with a 10% discount, as I'm doing the sharks, so $135). Is this right? It's not the $200 you mention in the description above.

Also, their Sea Lion cruise NORMALLY leaves in the afternoon but, on that particular day, it IS in the morning, but at 9:00am (not 8:00, as the description above says).

So I've held off booking the Sea Lions for now, as I'd like to make sure I'm booking the same trip as you all.

Is the Calypso Sea Lion tour/swim the right one - the same as you?

    Looking forward to this!

    Cheers,
    Bruce.

I just booked and paid for the sea lions with calypso and it was $135 (with the 10% discount) and was on the morning of the 5th. So it sounds like you are on the right trips!

Thanks Ruth - I'll give Calypso a buzz back and make the booking.

    Hi Jon,

This sounds fantastic, and very exciting!

I've already done the seal snorkelling here in Port Phillip, and I went to Tonga last year, primarily to swim/snorkel with Humpback Whales - and snorkelling with Whale Sharks out of Exmouth over in WA is on my "must do sometime" list, too. I didn't know about this particular "swim with an amazing sea creature" option, so thanks very much for finding and sharing it!

I've click "Yes", for now, and will look into practicalities, logistics and budget over the next couple of weeks - and hopefully make the necessary bookings. I'll keep you posted.

Feel free to drop me a line directly, if you'd like to get in touch with me.

    Cheers,

    Bruce.

Thanks, Jon. I agree - the flight is the most critical (it's the Adelaide <-> Port Lincoln leg that's the key factor). Wotif.com shows loads of accommodation options for all budgets, and plenty of availabilty, and that's good news about the two excursions.

And I'll "watch this space" for the Whale Sharks, when that season comes round again in a few months. :-)

This sounds amazing and I'm very interested. So, I'll click "Yes" for now, and look into logistics (and budget) over the next couple of weeks. Exciting! :-)

Hey guys, I bought my tickets today. I took the deal with the backpackers place. I am also booked on the snorkel with sealions tour on Sunday. It is all available. Hopefully I will see you there!

I'm interested in coming along if this gets off the ground. Pretty sure I will be free to come. Might see if I can find some other buddies to come along!
