Conventions?

So I know I don't attend very often - but I hope that will change. ;) But, as a a geek in a geek club, I had to ask myself?

How many of us go to cons? Are there cons you're excited to be going to? Any that you care to recommend to your fellow Club members?

Just interested in hearing from folks!

I love going to cons... it can be addicting. I go regularly to DragonCon in Atlanta, MobiCon in Mobile, MidSouthCon in Memphis, sometimes to CoastCon in Biloxi, this year I am adding AnimeBluesCon in Memphis and FandomFest in Louisville! DragonCon can get a bit expensive (and worth every penny) The others are more affordable and lots of fun! All have a large gaming area, panels and guests. Costumes everywhere... not many people attend in regular attire, most have on costumes.

AnimeBluesCon is coming up in June 15th at the Hilton in Memphis. There are cons close by in Birmingham, Little Rock, etc. I totally recommend trying one out, it's so much fun and so much to do. Most Cons are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I go to Dragon Con for four days because it's Labor Day weekend and goes on all Monday too, and I have yet to see half of what they have!

Having attended PAX Prime in 2008 and PAX East in 2010 and 2011, those are THE cons you want to go to. Every aspect of gaming/geek culture is covered: board games, video games, table-top RPGs, miniatures, cosplay, concerts, etc. There were so many of "us" there I got a little teary-eyed :)

PAX Prime is held in Seattle every summer and PAX EAST is in Boston during early spring. Once tickets go on sale for either show most tickets sell out in a matter of days so do not hesitate if there is the slightest chance you can make it. Its not hard to re-sale a ticket at face value if you can't come at the last minute either.

GenCon Indy 2012, Aug. 16-19th.

Gen Con Indy is the original, longest running, best attended gaming convention in the world. For over 44 years, Gen Con Indy has been setting the trend and breaking records. Last year, more than 120,103 turnstile and 36,106 unique attendees experienced Gen Con Indy. The biggest complaint we hear is that there is simply too much to do, see, and experience. Get lost in a phantasm of art exhibits. Stare at jaw-dropping costumes, or better yet, wear one of your own. Meet the movers and the shakers in the gaming industry. Check out the newest games and get a sneak peek at the latest editions.

And, of course, play your heart out with fellow enthusiasts in a community that understands your passion. What you'll experience at Gen Con Indy is nothing short of IT. You know, whatever "It" is for you? This is IT! Get ready to get there.

'Nuff said. I'm down if we can put together a group.

I personally only attend Dragoncon regularly. I already have a group of five going to help split the costs of the room (2 are strangers). You're right, Dragoncon is expensive, but only if you go it alone! I love all the different costumes, the 24hr panels and the massive amount of shopping one gets to do. ;)

I keep meaning to go to MidsouthCon but I always end up busy around that time of year and I've found if a con isn't large enough, I tend not to enjoy myself as much. Dragoncon was my first convention 12 years ago..it's left it's mark. ;)

I'd love to try more cons with people though - they're almost always better in groups!

I go to GenCon every year (unless something catastrophically bad happens).

I try to make any local convention that has a fair bit of Board Gaming.

Other than that the conventions outside of Memphis I plan on attending over the next year include:

GenCon Indy (August) http://gencon.com/...
Tennessee Game Days (March 9) http://tngamedays.com...
Geekway to the West St. Louis (May) http://geekway2west.c...

I would attend more than that but there are only so many vacation days!

If anyone else is planning on attending one of these just let me know and we'll see if we can't split hotel or travel expenses. I usually have room for one more depending on the convention in question.

There is a Memphis GameCon every year that I have been attending the past 3 years. This year will be my fourth time attending. I'm close friends with the people who organize this con and I have never been disappointed in the past. For more information, click on the link below:
