Hike Shelby Forest!!!

  • Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

910 Riddick Rd, Millington, TN (map)

    35.344447 -90.033789

  • We will meet at the Kroger @ Poplar and Highland to carpool
  • AGENDA: We will meet at the Kroger's on Poplar and Highland in East Memphis at 8:30 AM Sunday morning and then carpool/caravan to Millington!!! I will be parked in the section closer to McAlister's. I drive a red Pontiac Solstice. Call when you get there, [masked]. THERE IS LIMITED/NO CELL SERVICE IN THE PARK!

Please call me before 8:45 if you wish to meet me at Visitor's center at the Park. Once I get near the park, I do not have cell signal.

Once we arrive at the state park, we will choose one of many trail options. Trails are generally of moderate difficulty with some uphill and downhill slopes, nothing crazy, but expect them to be somewhat strenuous. There are a few exposed tree roots and rocks on the trail and so open-toed shoes are not recommended.

LOCATION INFO: Bordering on the mighty Mississippi River, two-thirds of this 13,467-acre park are bottomland hardwood forests of large oak, cypress and tupelo. The park also contains two lakes and many miles of hiking trails. The park maintains a boat ramp on the Mississippi River. Deer, turkey, beaver and some 200 species of birds are abundant. The park campground provides 49 campsites equipped with table, grill, electrical and water hookups. A modern bathhouse provides hot showers. There is a dump station for self-contained trailer rigs. Sites are available on a first-come, first served basis, however reservations may be made well in advance through the visitor center. Reservations may be made for campsites and are recommended during major holidays call to reserve: 1-[masked].

WHAT TO BRING: !!!!!Plenty of water!!!!, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, sunglassess, good shoes, spare socks and/or clothes (if you sweat like me), daypack/backpack, camera/camcorder, hiking stick (optional), binoculars, light snacks/trail mix, and a positive attitude.

LIABILITY AND CONSENT OF WAIVER STATEMENT: Attending events by Memphis Hiking Meetup is at you own risk. While organizers do everything they can to try to set up a safe event, accidents do happen and organizers cannot be held responsible otherwise no one would want to run any events. In the end, you are 100% responsible to your own safety and health. It is assumed that you are healthy and in good enough physical shape to be able to participate in an event. If you should question your health and your physical well being before any event, please do not attend. Organizers have the right to deny participation if anyone looks ill-prepared or unsure if they can keep up with the level of activity. In order to be prepared for hosted hiking activities, you should bring at minimum plenty of water, food, sun screen and common sense on every event. We require good- fitting shoes to be worn at all times while on the trails. If you have any questions about the level of skill required or about any event posted, please feel free to ask the organizer!
