SHILOH UPDATE - departs Arlington Visitors Ctr - Sat April 7 - 7am please arrive 10-15 min early....

Sent on: Monday, April 2, 2012 10:52 AM

We will depart the Arlington Visitors Center  (12036 Arlington Trails – just off I40/hwy 205) at 7am (please arrive 10-15 min early to sign waivers) to head to Shiloh (we will stop for a fast food breakfast on the way).  BRING A PICNIC LUNCH as the few restaurants in the area may be overwhelmed – not to mention snacks and plenty of water.

If you are meeting us at the park – we will be at the visitor’s center at 9:30.

There is a new 30 minute park film that we will work in sometime during the day.

There are two hikes available:  the group will choose which they wish to do…

Alone on the Left: Stuart's Brigade at Shiloh
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Trace the actions and footsteps as this isolated infantry brigade protects left flank of the entire Union Army against overwhelming infantry and artillery for several hours. Also, learn about the "hard luck" 71st Ohio Infantry and the controversy surrounding
their actions at Shiloh.
Parking: Tour Stop #14
Distance 1.5 miles
Terrain: Moderate

Turning the Enemy's Right: S.A.M Wood's Brigade and Confederate Realignment
11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Johnston's battle plan had called for the Confederate army to turn the Union left flank and drive them northwesterly into flooded Owl Creek. Unfortunately, the Confederate attack broke into two distinct efforts, one pushing the Union left and one pushing Federals who were falling back on the right. Follow Wood's Brigade as Confederate leaders attack the Union right and the results of their decisions on the field. Discover
how the soldiers in Wood's Brigade carried out their orders and attempted to destroy the enemy at their front.
Parking: Tour Stop #9
Distance: 2.5 miles (approximate)
Terrain: Moderate to difficult

At 2:30 we will depart the visitor’s center for a 2.5 hour car caravan tour led by local tour guide Jimmy Whittington taking us to high points of the battlefield.  This will take place during the heat of the day.

After the car carvan tour, we will have time to explore the river front and cemetery before heading out on the illumination tour which starts at 6 (although it is not dark then).

We will find some place for dinner on the way back.
