I'm getting ready to update our banner graphic on Meetup. If you have a photo that you would like to be considered for our banner, please upload photos you have taken to this album, between now and the end of the month (you can continue to add to this album after the end of the month, for use on future banners):

(Note: photos taken in the landscape direction work best, since we will only be able to take a narrow strip out of them to use for the banner)

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing your submissions!

<![CDATA[Step It Up USA]]> https://www.meetup.com/MemphisOutdoors/messages/79224711/
If any of you have a Fitbit and are planning on joining the Step It Up USA challenge this year, and would like accountability with your fellow hikers, we've created a group on there for Memphis Outdoor Adventures. You can join the group, or just do it by yourself, but it's more fun together, right?

WALK YOUR WAY TOWARD BETTER HEALTH

50 states. 2 weeks. 1 challenge.

America, get ready to walk as much as possible.
Over the last year, the Surgeon General has been challenging communities across the country to get up and get moving. Fitbit is taking that challenge to the next level by asking everyone to Step It Up and take as many steps as possible from October 13‑26.

It's already started, but it's not too late to join!

<![CDATA[Autumn is in the air.....]]> https://www.meetup.com/MemphisOutdoors/messages/79106220/ YES, Autumn is in the air. I am already seeing signs of autumn, there are a few leaves falling, the maples and sweet gums are starting to change color. The Goldenrod and thistle are in bloom as are Mist Flower and Ragweed. This morning I saw Terns and a number of Warblers over head and several Monarchs about - the fall migration is upon us - and will be in full swing for the next few weeks. Gulf Fritillaries are all around my passion flower vines and they are covered in caterpillars; there are lots of Cloudless Sulphurs and Eastern Tail Blues everywhere. Caterpillars are everywhere - just look at the side walks or anything parked under trees - small pellets of dung everywhere. The mornings are crisp yet the days are still warm.

What am I trying to say?????

GET OUT AND LOOK TO THE LEFT, TO THE RIGHT, ABOVE AND BELOW... IT IS ONE OF THOSE SPECIAL TIMES OF YEAR.

Take time and be sure to include NATURE in your next walk/hike. There is so much WONDER to see...

HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US FOR A FALL WALK/HIKE/TRIP?

Howard Is this a mandated charge across Tennessee for bikers from the TWRA? I support the Mountain Bikers use of Herb Pardons trails. In my experience, these folks are polite trail users, mindfull of their impact, and more often than not, are working the hardest to provide a better experience for everyone. The Hikers and Walkers are in need of a reality check. With the interest in mountain biking growing each year, yes, the bikers become the chosen identity to prove a point. Do not let these cries and demands of a few, misrepresent those who use the parks differently.

The bikers do a huge service for the "one timers," "weekend warriors,” and "pole fishers”. Let’s play together, the sandbox is big enough for both, or both, may be paying the usage fee.

Ranger Sam brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our group — and new EVENTS!

You asked for a refresher on fire building and safety? Guess what, that's is one of many programs programs that Ranger Sam will be bringing to the table. A sampling of other events in the works: a winter swamp canoe floats soon, an Easter egg hunt, with lots of prizes, and of course guided hikes, animal.shows, etc.

Ranger Sam will also soon be doing bee programs with an observation hive (she keeps honey bees).

She has lots of other special hikes planned, too, like a Trail-less Tromp, where we will be going off trail, learning to use a GPS, or compass and map, and move through the forest to a specific destination.

Anyway, I hope that whets your appetite.

Yours on the trail,

Hello Everyone,
With Dana's approval, I wanted to let you know about an ongoing volunteer opportunity. As many of you already know, I am a residential counselor at Youth Villages and we are in the need of volunteer mentors. Being a volunteer mentor is quite simple and involves an interview, background check and training before you are matched with a child. Our children are ages 8-18 years old (boys and girls) and often have little or no contact with their own families.
As a mentor, I have had the opportunity to take a child to Grizzlie games, bowling, to the arcade, putt putt, museums, hiking, fishing, movies, make homemade playdough, slime and no-bake cookies. Mentoring is a great way to give back to the community and if you are new to the city, it's a great way to learn your way around. Since mentors are not paid for their time, low-cost activities and ideas are sent out to assist in planning outings.
If you are interested, please check out the website: http://www.youthvillages.org/what-we-do/mentoring.aspx#sthash.xBqN2qJm.dpbs
or contact me at Desiree Price at [address removed].
Thanks and see you on the trails!!

Since mentors are not paid for their time, low-cost activities and ideas are sent out to assist in planning outings.

<![CDATA[Greetings from a Darn Yankee!]]> https://www.meetup.com/MemphisOutdoors/messages/70720822/ Howdy y'all.

I've had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of you but considering I have 1500+ members in the 6 groups I run, I've probably only met a quarter or less of you. So, I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Dana. I originally hail from Vermont, but I have lived in NH, MA, and RI. I moved to Memphis in 2006. I have worked at FedEx and now work at Medtronic. I'm a computer geek, love food, the outdoors, and trying new things. I'm an INTP (Google it) and, believe it or not, run shy.

I started organizing groups for several reasons. First and foremost was to overcome shyness, meet new people, and work on an area of weakness, interpersonal intelligence. There is more to that last part, ask if you are interested.

It has been an amazing but challenging 6 years. I have had the pleasure of swapping stories with folks from Malaysia, Palestine, Vietnam, Germany, South Americas, .... and from all over the United States. I have been humbled and blessed by talking to some truly amazing people. Out of the hundreds of Meetups I have attended, 99.9% have been absolutely amazing.

However, there are three things I'd like to address: no shows, not reading meetup descriptions, and criticisms. These may not apply to many of you but I have no way to target specific people. Sorry:(

First, no shows and lateness. In the past week, I have hosted a hike, dinner, and BBQ. The hiking group had 10 out of 20 and the Dining Out had 3 out of 8 members show up as promised. Please remember, when you RSVP, that you are telling me (or one of my assistants) and the other members that you will meet us somewhere at a specific time. Ahead of time, I, personally, get excited to meet you (or see you again). The members that show up and I look for you at the time you agreed to show up. When you don't show up, I'm saddened and a little miffed. So are the members who showed up on time as promised. I understand people forget but when ten people "forget" (or can't be bothered to take a few seconds to update their RSVP), it is upsetting. After an event with a no show rate of about half, I go through an internal debate about keeping going as an organizer. It overshadows the entire event and saps my energy and enthusiasm for organizing as a whole.

Next, when I (or my assistants) organize a Meetup, we usually post a full description of the event. Unfortunately, the full description does not appear on the mobile apps that most of you are using. Please, before emailing a question, texting, calling, or commenting.... READ THE FULL DESCRIPTION on the website. Howard and other organizers field tons of redundant questions that were answered in the full description. It makes organizing more adventurous and different Meetups a challenging and frustrating process.

Which brings me to my last point (finally), criticism. Other organizers and I have been criticized for a number of things. Most recently, it was for not having more "adventurous" Meetups. Before complaining, please take a minute to think about the fact that WE DO NOT GET PAIDto do this. We organize for free, volunteering and our time and effort. On top of that, weSPEND money. At minimum, there is the cost of gas and usually food. Additionally, I actually have to PAY Meetup to run my groups. We take time out of our hectic daily lives to try and bring folks from all over the world together for an awesome event. To donate time, money, and effort for 6 years and get criticized for not doing enough is a slap in the face.

If you want more adventurous Meetups, try asking us how you can help instead of berating us publicly in front of 1200+ members and untold number of visitors to the group. You want a kayaking Meetup, take a few seconds to google an outfitter and call them for details. If you want Meetups on a different day, time, or place.... take a minute and use the Suggest a Meetup feature. Even better, become an assistant.

So please, remember, before you pull a no show, ask already answered questions, and/or vent about our inadequacies as organizers, please take a moment to realize there are people on the receiving end of your (perhaps unintentionally) inconsiderate action(s).

For those of you that do show (or let us know that you can't make it), do read event descriptions, thank us for organizing events, and/or donate to the cause, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! It is because of you that my assistants and I have kept going for 6 years dedicating thousands of hours (and dollars) to running these groups. We cannot thank you enough. It is because of you that we have persevered!

Dana

<![CDATA[Pinnacle Mountain (AR) Hike]]> https://www.meetup.com/MemphisOutdoors/messages/70351872/ All,

One of the hikes the planning group expressed an interest in this year was hiking Pinnacle Mtn. (just 20 min west of Little Rock).

Our fellow hikers across the River are planning a hike there is coming weekend, so I thought I'd make you aware of it, in case you are interested. For those coming from Memphis area, this would likely involve driving out Friday night, for the Saturday morning hike.

I will not be able to make it myself, because of other obligations, but here's the Meetup.com page for the hike:

http://www.meetup.com/ArkansasOutdoorAdventures/events/189549662/

P.S. I've done this hike before and there is a beautiful view from the summit, well worth the drive. This hike will be following the west summit trail (a little bit strenuous, but if you have come on our hikes around Herb Parsons, over at Lucius Burch, or at Shelby Forest, you should be able to do this). I have been on both the West and East Summit Trails and neither of them require special gear. Summit elevation is 1,011 ft, with only about 750 ft elevation gain from base to summit.

<![CDATA[Mar 16 Shelby Farms Nature Hike]]> https://www.meetup.com/MemphisOutdoors/messages/65693832/ SUPER KID FRIENDLY EVENT - SUNDAY STROLLS NATURE HIKE, MARCH 16 departs the back patio (next to Patriot Lake) at 2PM SHARP for a look at macro invertebrates in the waters in the area…

The actual hike will be relatively short (less than 2 miles) – we will visit several places of water – vernal pools, ponds, and spring streams to check out what macro invertebrates (critters we can see without a microscope) we can find. We will hike to the water areas (includes going through some brush so wear long pants and appropriate shoes) and we will be out for a couple of hours – so bring some water/snacks. We will be getting our hands wet with pond water – so you might want to bring some anti-bacterial hand cleaner and towels. Collection trays and handouts will be provided.

If you as an adult/parent have never done this, YOU WILL BE AMAZED! Bring your kids – I guarantee that you both will be DELIGHTED in all the things we will find. You will not believe all critters that are in the water.
