Birding at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

Join us as we search for wintering and migrating birds at Plum Islands' Parker River National Wildlife refuge.  We should see several duck species and a variety of land birds.   This beautiful refuge includes sandy beaches, marshes, and maritime forest.  We'll drive the 6.5 mile refuge road and stop at several observation points.  We'll walk approximately 2-4 miles on refuge trails and boardwalks over the course of the day.  We'll also spend some time scanning the ocean for seabirds.

We will explore the island at a relaxed pace and take time to enjoy whatever we see.  Please bring binoculars if you have them.  We will bring an extra pair to share and a spotting scope.

We'll plan to be on the refuge for about 4 hours.  Please bring water, snacks, and lunch.

Dogs are not allowed on the refuge.

Outhouses are available.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per car.  Please carpool if possible.

A refuge map is available using the following link.

Looks like we will have a large group! If you can't make it, please remember to change your RSVP. Although there is plenty of parking at Parking Lot 1 on the refuge where we'll be meeting, we will need to consolidate into a small number of cars because there is limited parking at some of the places we will be exploring. So why not plan carpooling now? Anyone wanting to carpool from Nashua: please post here and plan to meet at the Conway Arena parking lot (5 Stadium Drive - exit 5W off Route 3) at 8:30 am. Thanks! Let's hope for good weather and great birds!

I haven't gotten any interest in carpooling directly from Nashua. Email me today (Saturday) if you want to drive with me and Carol.

Many of the boardwalks are closed due to storm damage and part of the roadway, too. Access could be difficult. So check it out closer to the date.

Hi again, it doen't look that bad right now. From the descriptions on the refuge web site, some areas are closed, but we should be able to see quite a bit from the areas that are open. If we can't see the ocean from the refuge, we might be able to go to the state park on the north side of the island.
