Redefining Work - Redefining Wealth An Evening with Dr. Edgar Cahn Sponsored by Merrymeeting Community Shares Location: the UCC Church, 150 Congress Ave., Bath, ME Time: Community Supper: 5-6 p.m. (food provided) Talk: 6:30 p.m. Cost: $10 “We have what we need when we use what we have.” These are the words of Dr. Edgar Cahn, founder of the now worldwide service exchange system known as ‘Time Banks’. Dr. Cahn is a civil rights lawyer and social innovator. As an activist he has made significant impacts in areas ranging from hunger and poverty to public housing and indigenous peoples’ rights. His key projects include VISTA, Americorps, Legal Aid for the Poor, and ‘Time Banking’. Before speaking in Bath on April 14, he will be the keynote speaker at an Innovation and Sustainability Conference on the 13th at the Maine Center for Economic Policy at UMA. The service exchange system is based on the age-old principles of compassion and reciprocity known as the Core Economy. It was designed to fill the gap created by the incremental erosion of the Core Economy over the last 40 years as changing economics pushed more people into the work force, leaving many family and neighborly needs unattended. Merrymeeting Community Shares, a non-profit modeled on the “Time Bank”, is an hour for an hour service exchange organization open to all here in the Bath/Brunswick area. According to the MCS Coordinator, Donna Robinson, “in this area we are privileged to draw on a population wealthy in resourcefulness, creativity, skills and wisdom. By exchanging these energies we strengthen ourselves as individuals, families and communities while we enhance the quality of our lives.” During the evening, Dr. Cahn will discuss how the principles of the service exchange system are particularly relevant in today’s economy, and how by examining our assumptions about work and wealth we can make new choices that will better support us and our communities. The event will take place at the UCC Church in Bath, ME on April 14th with a Community Supper from 5-6pm, Dr. Cahn at 6:30, and a Q&A session from 7-8:00.
