The Transition Towns and Permaculture movements are positive, creative, community-led responses to the challenges of climate change, economic uncertainty, and the pressing need for sustainable energy.

The momentum began building with the advent of Permaculture in the seventies. Permaculture isthe design science rooted in the observation of nature’s eco-systems. Its purpose is to create an approach to living that emulatesthe enduranceand resilience of those natural systems.

While Permaculture is often thought of as a methodof gardening, it is actually a way of thinking about, designing, and implementing sustainable lifestyles. It has emerged from thatmindset and is applied to our homes and properties and then extendedoutward, naturally including a systems approach to gardening as well.

Transition Towns were born from Permaculture. Often, at least one person on the steering committee of aTransition Town has completeda Permaculture Design Certification Course. A Transition Town is apermaculture design applied to an entirecommunity - and the focus is on ACTION.  The lessons we learn in our own backyards through Permaculture design and practice can be applied to wholetowns, states, bioregions, and nations.  Whether it's our backyard or our town, the outcome is an approach to life that nurtures the Earth and all beings, builds a healthy local economy, celebrates daily life, and is ultimately independent of fossil fuels. We can apply Permaculture principalsto any system - transport, food distribution, energy, governance, education, communication - we'll always get the same result: strong and resilient communities!

Ourgoal as Merrymeeting Permaculture & Transitionis to purposefully transition as a regionfrom oil dependency to local resilience.  A resilient community generates the resources necessary to sustain itself and respond fluidly to external events.
