Monthly Meteor Toronto Meetup

Meteor is an ultra-simple environment for building modern websites. What once took weeks, even with the best tools, now takes hours with Meteor. And with the approach of Meteor version 1.0 -- sometime soon in 2014 -- the excitement over Meteor is definitely building.

For March:

In a simplified and shorter version of their course, Paul Dowman and the good folks from OK GROW! will be building a simple Meteor app, from the ground up! Come out and see some of the thinking that goes into building a Meteor web application.

Plus, and as usual... If you are working on something... Come show us your stuff!!! Email me with the details of what you would like to share with the group, and I'll reserve a spot for you. (Click on my profile, then click "Send email".) Nothing finalized? Come and show us anyway... we'd love to see it.

Approximate Agenda:

(Note the agenda may be changed from time to time. Check back often.)

7:00 - Introductory proceedings + announcements
7:15 - We Build a Meteor App
8:45 - Presentation Questions + Discussion
9:15 - 10:30 - Coding + socializing + impromptu presentations*

* We have all sorts of audiovisual connections at our disposal. If anyone wants to present something cool they've done with Meteor, or some nice snippet of related code, we'd be keen to check it out. (If you are working on something but it's not yet ready, let us know ... perhaps you can introduce it at the next event. Thanks in advance.)

Build a pommodoro app. Great to compare it to Paul's code. There's also a great blog post I found on the Meteor party example you could follow : http://asynchrotron.c...

Great for newbies and I appreciate that you skipped "the boring stuff" in favour of "cool stuff".

Not all instructors have an eye for what the audience wants. Good job.

Thanks for coming out! I enjoyed that. Here's the repo for what we built:

I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Hey everyone, just a reminder that the meetup is tomorrow at 7 PM at Bento Miso.

We're going to be building a simple Meteor app together and then you'll have the opportunity to hack on it and get more advanced after if you like.

    Here's what you'll need:

    1. A computer, or a person beside you with a computer to share.
    2. Basic JavaScript editing ability. If you've ever copied some code from Stack Overflow and made it work then you're probably good here!
    3. Meteor installed on your computer, here's a quick and easy guide:

That's it! See you tomorrow night!

I'm going to try to pop in for a little at the very least. There's another thing at Bento tomorrow night too.

is this suitable for someone with little programming/coding experience?

    March 13, 2014

    • Paul D.

Hi Charlotte, we're going to be coding live, but anyone with basic familiarity with JavaScript should be able to follow along. I'm going to send some resources next week to help prepare.
