Introductory session

Nclud is hosting the first of many Meteor.js meetups in Washington,D.C. This meetup will serve as an introduction to Meteor.js. We'll show you how to get the development environment setup on your own local machine (if you choose to bring one), and we will create a very simple web application. We will finish by deploying the web application to a live server!

There will be pizza, beer, and stickers.

Here are some ideas for future sessions, meteor and d3, meteor and gamification, meteor and security, meteor and ux (in particular maybe the ux no-nos with meteor), meteor and canvas, testing meteor apps, I will think of more I am sure.

Another topic might be troubleshooting on the client and server.

      June 12, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

That's a great topic. I definitely have experience troubleshooting using Chrome Dev tools - I can do a 20-30 minute debugging talk!

I very much enjoyed the session and people I met. I was bummed to see meteor currently only officially supports Mac and Linux. But I am not really that disappointed, I mean, it gives me one more reason to jump to Mac.

Hey, I wasn't able to make it either (2 major tests tomorrow). Hope you guys have an awesome time!

In the future, could we move these meetups to a friday night or the weekends, because that would be much more convenient?

    June 10, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

I'll be honest - there is very little chance of having it on Friday nights or the weekend. At least, I personally wont be able to host anything at nclud those days.

      June 11, 2014

    • Sashank T.

I'll try my best to make it next time then!

Great meetup and thank you, Ramsay, for setting it up. I look forward to future meetings!

I enjoyed visiting but for someone that is new to using javascript frameworks it went a bit over my head. I'll try to get the Discover Meteor book and work through that.

Thanks everyone! I have a subscription to code school and I am working through the JavaScript tracks a little at a time. I've been solely a backend programmer for most of my career so front-end/full stack development is new to me.

      June 11, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Lastly, you can look at CodePen for great examples - which is like jsfiddle but way better, I think.

Pretty good, especially for beginners to Meteor. I hoped for more networking time, group discussion (possibly by topic of interest). I would be interested in architectural discussions, like: how to use Node modules with Meteor (pros and cons); advanced jQuery functionality in Meteor (drag-and-drop, animations); Meteor event model and co-existance with jQuery event model.

I found a lot of good (relatively advanced) info at: http://meteorhacks.co... -- not necessarily exactly what you asked about.

      1 · June 11, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Yup! Meteorhacks is one of the resources I mentioned last night and is also on the resources page here. Definitely check it out!

The presentation didn't present the "why meteor?" info that we could find on the meteor web site -- no overview / "big picture" was given. It just showed some meteor apps running and some of the code for them. This could be good or bad depending on whether you had that overview.

    1 · June 11, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Sorry, I thought I covered this though I realize I probably didn't dedicate enough time to it. Also, "why?" is a bit objective, but for me, I mentioned I loved meteor because 1) Full stack javascript - its the only language you need to know for both server and client side interactions and 2) reactive data sources and live HTML injection without browser refreshing. I covered these pretty extensively, though I realize I didnt state them as obvious advantages.

That being said, all of the "benefits" are front and center on meteor.com.

      June 11, 2014

  • Ramsay L.

Thanks for coming everyone! It was really awesome to see people get excited for Meteor. I hope to host many more monthly meetups in the future.

Don't forget about the message board - please post stuff you'd like to learn, or if you know of any guest speakers that would like to talk to the group.

Hey there, stuck at work on a production issue... Bummer! Hope it goes well.

Gang - I've added the example app that we'll be walking through to GitHub. If you want to get a head start - check it out.

A few magic incantations later, and I'm successfully running the app. (I gather that meteor uses npm these days...)

      June 10, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Yes - sorry for not clarifying. In case anybody else needs to know how to install node and npm, this is a great resource (if you have a mac with OSX).

Guys - there will be 15 pizzas. 15.

    Pizzas.

    Bring friends.

    June 9, 2014

    • Steve J.

Wow, really generous of you all! I vote for a veggie.

      June 9, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

We ordered a bunch of different types - all the types actually. There will be several vegetarian options.

I work for Nclud here in DC (www.nclud.com) and I have built a few Meteor apps. We'd love to host an introductory meeting at our office sometime after business hours.

We'll provide free beer and pizza and stickers. Who is interested?

    April 29, 2014

    • Marjorie R.

Any chance of food and drink for the health-conscious teatotaler? (Ice water and lemon would work on the drink side.)

      June 5, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

We have a filtered water and sodas as well. Food wise - I think it's just going to be pizza. We can order a veggie pizza if you'd like.

  • Sashank T.

    Hey guys,

Could I attend this meteor meetup (I'm 15, so I was wondering if its OK with you for me to come even though beer is being served)?
I have tons of experience with meteor to share and would love to gain some more. Thanks!

    1 · June 4, 2014

    • Marjorie R.

I hope you can make it. Looks like it's not a bar, so you won't be carded. I have no affiliation with Nclud, but here's just a note that this meteor newbie would welcome your presence.

      June 5, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Yes, you most certainly can come! Just...stay away from the beer. We'll be watching. :D

      June 5, 2014

  • Ramsay L.

Hey gang, if you are planning on making it, I'll advise bringing your laptop. I was planning on walking everyone through getting Meteor setup. As mentioned, I'll also be walking through development of a very simple app, which I will post to github before the meeting so everyone can clone the repository.

If you want. If not, no pressure. You can just watch and be amazed.

I'm excited for this. I love meteor and the community around it!

Coming from NoVA. Any suggestions on where to park? Or is metro an option (which stop?)?

    May 29, 2014

    • Jeff S.

Chantilly area - can hop on at Vienna (orange) pretty easily.

      May 30, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Yup, that is where I get on as well. About a 30 minute ride.

      May 30, 2014

  • J. M.

My primary comment is that "2nd Tuesday" seems to be the most popular night for meetups. (In April, there were 4 I would have attended.) If it were a different day, you might get more people.

Also, someone should change the "I can host ... at my condo" description.

    1 · May 1, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Understandable. Unfortunately, we at nclud host a lot of events and our calendar is pretty tight. We can discuss different times for future meetups though!

      May 29, 2014

  • Ramsay L.

BTW, just ordered the Meteor stickers from Sticker Mule and they look rad!

  • Matthew M.

I'm in. We just got done with a decently-sized Meteor project and it was a good experience, all in all. Love to talk to some other folks about their thoughts.

    1 · April 29, 2014

    • Ramsay L.

Awesome! We'd love if you wanted to share your experience with Meteor with a demo.

In. We are trying to pick a good technology for next generation of web applications.

    1 · April 30, 2014

Okay, I'm trying to schedule a date. Generally, how are Tuesday nights for everyone? Probably around 6:30 or 7:00.

    Always down for free stickerz.
