Lights At The Denver Zoo

Want more night-shooting experience? The Lights at the Denver Zoo runs from Dec. 6th to Jan. 5th, 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Admission (ages 12-64) $12, 65+ $10. http://denverzoo.org/zoolights/
I've checked the weather forecast and next weekend is predicted to be very warm. Friday, December 27th is forecasted to have a high of 58 and a low of 38 degrees. Also, I called guest services and they DO allow tripods for the Zoo Lights. So, decent weather (hopefully, this is Colorado, after all!), great light show, a fun place to shoot and near downtown, with plenty of free parking.
Note that you can't go earlier, they clear the grounds at 5:PM and re-open for the lights at 5:30PM.
sorry about the short notice, but this show only runs for another few days.

They were beautifully done...there were certainly shots to take but most were crowded with big and little people.

Mom and I got there about 6. I saw you Ron, but Mom was already in the line to get in....all or nothing at the point! As others said, EXTREMELY busy in there. As I drove in, I took one look at the crowd and decided to ditch the tripod. But all in all had a lot of fun.

It was really packed, but as soon as they opened the ticket gates it moved pretty well. I could only find Tom and Bobbi ET, sorry I missed anyone else that was there. Great weather, lots of fun lights and sights!

I got to the zoo about 7:45; parked near the museum. I was in the zoo by 8:00. I looked for fellow photographers but didn't see anyone. At 9:00 I headed to the restaurant..no one there. Since I used the museum road I had no problem getting out. I thought it was a great night.

Ron.. I got to the zoo around 5:30. Good Lord it was packed. I was unable to find parking anywhere near the entrance and didn't feel all that safe walking alone with poorly lit streets. I headed back home. I hope everyone has a great time this evening! the lights looked beautiful from City Park as I tried to find my way back to York. LOL

I've come down with a nasty bug so don't want to be out infecting others. Have fun and can't wait to see everyone's photos.

This sounds like there is going to be a lot of visitors for the lights. It was crowded enough when I went of a free day and had some problems trying to get some shots. So I'm going to pass on this meeting. Hope everyone gets some good pics and will look at them on line.

Heads Up: I volunteer at DZ and have been working Zoo Lights. The zoo has done an outstanding job with the lights and it's a lot of fun. However; this week kids are off from school and we have been getting 9,500 - 10,000 visitors per night! The lines to get in already start at 5pm . By 6pm it may take at least half an hour to find parking. 2 visitors last night got separated from their groups and asked to use my cell phone to call and find out where in the zoo they were. Tonight the weather is supposed to be warmer and it's a Friday. It's going to be very difficult to find group members once inside the zoo. Be sure to have a contact number and work out a spot to meet. Tripods, I leave to your discretion but I personally would not bring one. Crowds start to die down by 7:30 - 8:00pm. Once you are in you can remain on zoo grounds till 9:30pm. For more info: http://www.denverzoo.org/event/zoo-lights-0

Buying tickets on line does help. There will still be a line at the gate to get in but the whole process should be much quicker if you have tickets in advance.

Thanks Catherine...BTW I agree about the tripod...too many small fast moving feet, I am sure.

I want to avoid the rush of people and hope some will have left by the time I get there. I plan to arrive around 7:30 and will try to catch up with the group toward closing time.

Melissa, sure! Bring' em along, maybe they'll get the photography bug. The Zoo and lights are great fun for kids anyway.
Hi Susan, I'll be right outside the ticket gate (maybe a little early) by 6:00, once we round up everyone we can go in. There's usually a few questions and tips to share. Once inside, it's OK to split off, the entire group trying to travel together hardly ever works out in a crowded venue. Since it ends at 9:00, some folks will want to head home, others may want to collect at a late-night spot.

Where are we meeting at 6:00pm? Inside / outside the gates?

I will be there and will meet up with Heather Peterson...I am sure we will find the group.

Unfortunately I won't be able to join this adventure.

Most likely I will be there closer to 6:15 (factoring in travel time for me) since I work till 5:00. I'm feeling much better than I did last Thursday.

Should be fun. We can always use the kids as tripods if they get in the way lol

I was at the Zoo Lights Thurs night, when it was quite cold. I was surprised at how crowded it was. So even though tripods are allowed, "buyer beware"...there were LOTS of kids running around and parents with strollers who weren't the most photographer-friendly crowd I've seen. :-)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
