Moonlight Picnic and Hike @ Maybury State Park (W of Northville)

  • May 24, 2013 · 6:30 PM

A special event. Picnic, hike into the sunset, come back with the moonrise! Bring your beverage and a dish to pass. After we eat, we walk 3-4 miles of nature trails, leaving at 7:30 and returning with the full moon (9:15pm). Bring long sleeves for the evening chill.  Leader:  Phil,[masked]-2885.

Meet:  6:30pm at Maybury State Park - horse stable parking lot (picnic shelter) Take Eight Mile Rd. to Beck Road (2 miles west of Northville); go south on Beck .5 mile to entrance on west side. Drive in .2 miles and park.

The first perfect picnic and moonlight hike started out really windy and CHILLY. We had a sumptuous dinner that everyone brought to share - amazing that no-one brought a desert! Perhaps we are all still following our New Years resolve to be healthy-er, and eat lighter. We ate in the west end of the shelter, where there was some nice sun to warm us, then left at 7:30 to hike through the forest into the sunset. By the time we reached the camp area, the sun had dropped out of sight, and we continued our loop through the sugar maple forest, over hill and dale, enjoying the slower pace needed for after dark walking. As promised by our astronomical leader, the moon popped up through the trees as we completed the last half mile - back to our vehicles 2 minutes after 10pm. YES - I love it when a plan goes - as planned!

It was a Flower Moon or Milk Moon, sitting low on the horizon in a clear night sky. Good food, good walk, good company.

Bummed that I can't make it. Looks like it's going to be a great night.

I'm getting a message that the event filled up. Is it okay too late to RSVP?

I would like to join but would probably be running late. Can I just come near the end of the picnic and do the hike?

Yes, Jim; That would be alright. I recognize that people work, and might want to do the hike, but can't be there for the picnic. The picnic before is designed to give us all a chance to socialize before it gets dark, and we can't see as well.

If I am not in Ann Arbor on Friday, I will be there.
