Maybury State Park Potluck Picnic and Moonlight Hike ( near Northville)

  • Aug 24, 2013 · 6:00 PM

A special event!  Picnic, hike into the sunset, come back with the moonrise! Bring your beverage and a dish to pass. After we eat, we walk 3-4 miles of nature trails, leaving at 7pm and returning with the full moon (9:66pm). Bring long sleeves for the evening chill (and mosquitos).

Meet:  6pm at Maybury State Park - horse stable parking lot (picnic shelter). Take Eight Mile Rd. to Beck Road (2 miles west of Northville); go south on Beck .5 miles to entrance on west side. Drive in .2 miles and park.  Phil,[masked]C.

What a fantastic PICNIC this was. Everyone created culinary masterpieces - and with 5 deserts - we were all stuffed and smiling.
We left for our night hike, and stopped to view the alpenglow colors on our faces, and the red colors streaking through the tree trunks. The trail surface made us sharpen our sense of FEEL as our feet interpreted what we were stepping on - or in. (As in - horse apples)

The moon DID show up on schedule - just not the schedule I thought. As we drove toward home, the moon rose above the tree tops to light the sky. I think I need to look closer to the moon charts the next time we do this hike!

The Mayberry State Park Potluck Picnic and Moonlight Hike was very nice; It was fun hiking through out the trails at night. There is a saying that things go bump in the dark!

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've never been night hiking before.

I think it is still the same - $6.00 per day - much smarter to pay the $10 yearly fee, get a sticker for the license plate, or the windshield, and you are covered, AND support our state parks all at once!

According to the DNR website: "If your vehicle or motorcycle is registered in the State of Michigan, daily passes are no longer available, and you will need to purchase a Recreation Passport." The pass is now $11, and well worth every penny. If your vehicle is not registered in Michigan a day pass is $8.40.
