Hike the Lower Rouge in Canton

  • January 11, 2014 · 10:30 AM

We will explore this new trail system that follows the Lower Rouge River: 3 miles of linear trails at a moderate pace or 6 miles if we go both ways. The wide trails weave in and out, crisscrossing the river occasionally on laminated wooden bridges. There is a carved totem to study midway and several spots with benches. From I-275, go west on Michigan Ave. 1.5 miles. Turn north onto Morton Taylor Road, left into parking lot. Leaders: Diane,[masked]C; Bonnie,[masked]C.

Meet:  10:30 at the trailhead:  From I-275, go west on Michigan Ave. 1.5 miles. Turn north onto Morton Taylor Road, left into parking lot.

Did not happen. Road into the parking lot was a sheet of ice. Too treacherous.

Julie, your warning about the road to the parking lot was spot on. We waited at Morton Taylor and Michigan Ave to see how many people would actually show. Six people showed. We then took a vote whether to cancel the hike or head over to the Canton Library and hike in from there (1/2 mile hike to the start of the trail). Five people voted to hike, so to the library we headed.

We shall re-name the hike as "The slush mush before Freeze-up".
A very interesting pathway along the Lower Rouge River - sheet ice on the inlet road - so we re-treated to the Canton Library, and walked to the park entrance from there. Saw lot's of animal tracks in the DEEP snow, and evidence of unusual snow scenes. Only got a few pictures, will post on the Meetup site - under "Past Meetups" - search for "Hike the Lower Rouge in Canton" - then Photos. Met interesting people on the trail, and snow scenes.

I bummed! My road is a sheet of ice and I got stuck at the end of my driveway. Going to miss the hike. :(

Just arrived at trailhead. It is impassable. It is a sheet of ice.

I was out too late. I might make it, but I changed my "RSVP" to no due to wanting to probably sleep in. I do need the exercise, but I wish it was 11 a.m.

I was looking forward to this, but I wrecked my knee and ankle last Sunday and it hasn't gotten much better in the interim, so no go.

Is there an address? Is there a specific park name I can place in the GPS?

Hi, Mary - GPS only works with a mailing address and usually trailheads don't have one. Using a park name can get a GPS user in trouble as it may take a hiker to the park administrative office which is rarely at a trailhead. Phil, co-organizer of this Meetup, makes excellent use of the Google mapping function. I think you will find it more than sufficient. Just click on the blue link after "Map to trailhead:" in the written description of the event.

Hi Joanne and Diane, Thanks for the information. When I usually use Points of Interest and go to the recreation parks, I usually can find it. I will attempt both of your suggestions, thanks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
