Rowlett City Council Prayers

Join us in speaking up at the Rowlett City Council meeting about the Christian prayers that open their public meetings.  You can offer your viewpoint on legislative prayer in a 3minute window during the council meeting by simply signing up to do so when you arrive  or take a seat in the audience to show your support for those of us that do speak out.

This is a video of the Christians speaking after FFRF sent a letter in 2010. It was a circus. http://rowletttx.swagit.com/player.php?refid=10192010-65

Go to Item 9 for the Citizens' Input which is where we will be speaking tonight.

I wonder if anything we had to say touched them in any way? The Mayor and his snarky remarks about residency were not unexpected but still annoying...... Oh, you from North RIchland Hills? Grapevine? He seemed to give up after Chad spoke though.....

At least it shows that other cities are paying attention.

He gave up because I think they're mentality is that oh they're just atheists that don't even live in the city trying to dictate city policy till Chad showed up then that rationalization went out the window.

I just want to thank everyone for coming out. I know some of you drove very far. I really appreciated the support....

Even if you don't speak, your presence there will help us ;)

Here is the video link for those that can't make it. You can watch it live. I would say that the citizens' input portion would be around 7:45 or 8:00 -- it is toward the end of the meeting. http://www.ci.rowlett.tx.us/index.aspx?NID=397

Can anyone speak to the council or is it just residents of Rowlett?

The mayor and council members actually do it themselves fairly often. There is a transcript of prayers in the letter I linked.

They have a policy that the only people who can do invocations are ministers of churches located in Rowlett (which are ALL Christian), themselves, or police and fire chaplains (I've never seen a police or fire chaplain do it). I am going to ask that they open up the invocations to anyone who wants to do it for diversity reasons. (My hope is they will do away with the invocation rather than allow that to happen.)

Chris is on call, so we will not be able to make it out there on a school night. I hope it all goes well!

    I'm far away. Good luck!

Not all Rowlett prayer opponents want to be "out" so that is why some of us are speaking on their behalf.

I am pretty sure you can

I guess then I'll sign up. Hopefully not make a dork of myself. =P

Thanks for doing this. Frustrating this still happens as a Rowlett atheist, especially that the mayor sometimes leads them himself.

      Are you coming tonight?

I've put together a pre-show dinner on the FoF website, so please come join us before the city council meeting. The more the merrier, especially in this case. I think our numbers might make a difference.

For anyone that is interested here is the letter that was sent to Rowlett from FFRF in December. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B310C97KfIzvS1pLSEV5ZnBTTm8/edit?usp=sharing

Big Star works for me. I am horrible at public speaking, but this has been bugging me for quite some time.

    1 · February 21, 2013

If I can work up the nerve, I'll have a short speech prepared. I hate speaking in public, but for my activism, I can and do make exceptions. :) I say we meet at Big Star Burgers before the council meeting, to better prepare ourselves and get acquainted with one another? Around 6pm sound good for everyone?

I will have a thing or two to say!

Downtown Rowlett is right off the Bush turnpike. It's an easy drive from Garland, Plano, etc
