Winter Solstice Party

Winter Solstice CAMPING update!

If you (and yours) want to camp at Cedar Hill State Park on Friday, December 14 and/or Saturday, December 15, YOU MUST PAY IN ADVANCE for your site. Pre-payment allows us to reserve a block of sites so we can easily enjoy these extended celebration opportunities. Each site is $20/night; this fee includes two parking spots, running water, electrical hook-up, a grill/fire pit and, well, a place to pitch your tent(s). There are public restroom/shower facilities throughout the park.

We are asking that all payments are made BY DECEMBER 1 via the Metroplex Atheist PAYPAL account. Visit MetroplexAtheists.org and follow the link on the top of the homepage to make your reservations.

Note:

• The only meal provided by the MAs will be the picnic lunch on Saturday. Leftovers will certainly be shared!

• The MAs will sponsor an additional campsite for our group to gather around a warm, roaring fire during the evenings. Randy Word has offered to bring firewood. If you plan to have your own fire at your site, please bring your own wood and be sure all embers are extinguished before you go to sleep. It is dry during this season, and fires can spread rapidly.

• Public consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Texas state parks. If you choose to drink, please be discrete, beware of actions that might lead to a public intoxication arrest, and definitely do not drive (even between campsites). The MAs do not provide any alcoholic beverages to our guests.

• Expect cold temperatures, so bring adequate gear and clothing.

• If you do not reserve a campsite in advance, you may certainly arrange one on your own through the park!

Winter Solstice Picnic Update:

• Arrive at Pavilion #1 after 10:00 am. You will have to pay $7 per adult for a day pass to the Park.

• The MAs will provide grilled burgers and hot dogs starting at 1:00 p.m. We will also provide buns, ketchup, mustard, plates, utensils, potato chips, and paper towels.

• If you have special dietary needs, please know that any veggie or vegan burgers may be cooked on the same grill as meat products.

• We're hoping volunteers will provide lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and pickles.

• Please BRING A SIDE DISH to share! There are electrical outlets if you want to bring a crock pot, but you'll also need to bring an extension cord.

• Please BYOB, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Note that alcoholic beverages must be, ummmm, discrete. Which means in a closed container, disguised with a koozy, poured into a (self-provided) cup, etc. You must also provide your own water.

• At 3:00 p.m., we will do our white elephant gift exchange. We ask that all participants spend no more than $10 per gift. If you have a CHILD who wants to participate, please bring a child-appropriate gift. This part of the picnic is optional, but usually a lot of fun!

• ONLY RSVPs ON THIS MeetUp page will be counted when the MAs shop for food.

• More details to follow about camping.

Can someone get me Sammi Ruth's phone number or e-mail address? I gave her mine but haven't heard from her and she had expressed interest in attending the Abilene Atheist Community meetup this Friday.

    Thanks,
    -Darrell

    • Darrell R.

Yup! Hopefully I will visit her this weekend to get her meetup.com account all set up.

  • Libba

and the Black Bean burgers were good, too! Enjoyed the party - loads of fun!! Thank you Clark for the Egg Nog, I'm sorry you did not get to the party. Begona did a GREAT job in your stead, though. Thank you, Begonia. How is your doggie? I hope everything is OK, now.

    December 16, 2012

    • Begona M.

Thank YOU, Libba for helping me with the eggnog. And Clark's dog is doing better, thanks for asking.

For those lost by GPS the park entrance is on belt line road south of I-20.

    December 15, 2012

  • Caleb L.

I used the address listed on the Meet Up reminder, but that's just sending into the middle of Cedar Hill. Could I get some help finding the place?

    December 15, 2012

    • Amanda J.

That is the address of Cedar Hill State Park once you enter take the road straight back to Pavillion 1 past the marina store

      December 15, 2012

    • Caleb L.

It's not the address, actually. Or my GPS is off. I know where I'm going now. Thanks!

      December 15, 2012

  • Libba

Caleb, bring some kind of side dish, dip, whatever to go with hot dogs, hamburgers, if you wish. There wil be plenty of food if you don't bring anything. December 14, 2012

I have an extra campsite if anyone needs one. My babies are sick.

    December 14, 2012

    FOOD UPDATE THREAD
Hey, all! It's almost time for our Winter Solstice picnic! You are not obligated to post here, but I just want to start a thread for those who care to post.

    • I am bringing red onions for burgers. I've thin-sliced two, and am bringing a third.
    • Libba (as she posted below) is bringing her famous fudge.
    • I also have onion dip for chips. Plus a couple of extra bags of flavored chip. (The MAs are providing a bunch of potato chips; hence the dip.)

    December 13, 2012

  • Libba

4 batches of fudge made so far...

Hey Laura, I paid for a site for Friday and Saturday, and at one time we were on your list , but I didn't get an email. Do we have a reserved site?

    December 8, 2012

    • Shawn

I didn't get it the email.

      December 9, 2012

    • Catherine P.

I need the email as well please.

      December 9, 2012

  • Theresa

    Got it. Thanks

    December 9, 2012

  • Laura

Campers, our Reservation Confirmation is 7617315. If you have NOT received an email from me, you do NOT have a reserved site. You may make your own reservation, but we cannot guarantee you will have a site near the group.

    December 8, 2012

  • Laura

NEW CAMPING DETAILS: If you bring a pet (presumably a dog), you must keep it on a six-foot leash at all times. You must also provide updated vaccination records when you check in. Also, you may NOT forage for firewood; we'll be providing wood for our community site, so this rule applies only to your individual site.

If you plan to arrive EARLY on Friday, you'll have some administrative snafus. Ideally, everyone will arrive after Terry McDonald does. I will keep you posted with his ETA.

    1 · December 3, 2012

  • Catherine P.

What time does everyone plan on setting up on the 15th?

    November 19, 2012

    • Laura

Catherine: Greg and I are sharing a site with Randy Word. He'll be there before we are, since we have to wait till school's out to coordinate kid stuff. I suspect we'll arrive just after dark.

      November 25, 2012

    • Laura

I just realized you probably mean Friday, December 14. Greg and I have rearranged our schedules so we can check in early, scope out the reserved block of sites, choose the "community" site, etc. Exact time is still TBD, but definitely during daylight. Our early arrival also means we can trouble-shoot (if necessary) before other folks arrive.

      December 1, 2012

  • Laura

December 1 is the last day to pre-pay for a campsite. Here are the reservations we've received so far:

We will reserve a Friday/Saturday site for:

Bryce, the Greenes, Terry, the Ruzeks, Bryant, Darrell Ross, Wells, and Randy Word. Plus one for our community fire.

We will reserve a Saturday site for:

    Curtis, the Crowleys, and Kandy.

    November 30, 2012

    • Laura

Okay, I'll ask Chris A to check; I don't have direct access to our PayPal account!

      November 30, 2012

    • Laura

Adding the Piskes to the two-night reservations! Ten total sites for two nights; three total sites for Saturday only.

      December 1, 2012

  • Laura

IMPORTANT! Please comment on this thread if you plan to camp on Saturday night, December 15. Indicate if you will PROBABLY or DEFINITELY camp. As we plan, this information is essential so we can plan how many campsites we need. Details about camping will come later, after we have a reasonable headcount. Thank you!

      November 20, 2012

  • Amanda J.

Laura, What time does the park close to those that are not camping?

    November 18, 2012

    • Laura

I believe it closes at 10 p.m., although I have not personally confirmed that information. You may certainly leave at any time; "closed" refers to access into the park. (For campers who are reading along, you are given an access code for after-hours entry if you need to return after the gates are closed.)

      November 18, 2012

  • Laura

Winter Solstice Party Campers! If you want to reserve a site at Cedar Hill State Park for camping before and/or after our Saturday picnic, you must pay IN ADVANCE via PayPal at metroplexatheists.org before December 1!

    November 17, 2012

    • Catherine P.

Disregard. Was able to go in as a guest. Paid.

      November 18, 2012

    • Laura

      Awesome, Catherine!

      November 18, 2012

  • Laura

P.S. Campers should also bring flashlights/headlamps, trash bags (to hang from provided hooks above ground level), water for yourselves (don't count on drinking water from the provided taps), outdoor extension cords (power outlets are often 20-plus feet away from your tent-pitching area), and (I reiterate) bedding/clothing to sleep comfortably in December temperatures!

    November 16, 2012

    • Chris B.

Are we restricted to water? I rather bring drinking beer.

      3 · November 16, 2012

    • Laura

Ha, Chris! Actually, I have learned that people expect to be provided with "basics." I have no idea why, but I try to be VERY DETAILED to avoid complaints later!

      November 18, 2012

  • Laura

Picnic notes: No pets in the actual Pavilion where food is served. Any pets you bring must be on a leash. The Pavilion has electrical outlets, but no built-in lights; if you have a light, please bring it. After the picnic, we will go to our "community campfire" in a camping spot which will be determined on the date of the picnic. Randy Word has offered to bring firewood. At the "community campsite, you should BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair).
