METROTRAILS, a New Jersey Non Profit Corporation exists to assist with the planning, development, maintenance, and promotion of trail systems in the New York/Philadelphia metropolitan area, as well as to educate and entertain, as well as preserve the natural and historic aspects of trail routes.
The main function of this group is the promotion of not only trails systems, but friendship among hikers who wish to satisfy the appetite for a full day's experience by hiking the long and interconnected system of trails and other interesting routes throughout the area.
METROTRAILS began in 1997 as an informal high school hiking group in Washington, NJ. At the time, group members did not yet have vehicles or even drivers licenses, and so all hikes ended in Washington NJ and were about twenty miles.
As time went by, and drivers licenses were acquired, new hikes were organized connecting with previous hikes we'd already done. Before too long, a format was established: each hike would be a minimum of fifteen (15) miles, and would somehow connect with a previous hike. The theme would be less about "hiking" and more about "experiencing life by foot".
As time went by, original members of the group went off to college, and ultimately moved away. family, Co-workers, and college friends took their places, but for a time participation was waning.
Soon however, the tables turned and over the next decade the hikes were posted in various newspapers and local interest magazines, through Appalachian Mountain Club, New York/New Jersey Trail Conference, and other clubs and organizations, as well as social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace. We continued to gather on a weekly basis to explore new places.
Participation soured to often over thirty participants per activity, an unprecedented amount for such high mileage hiking.
In addition, the venues for the hikes continued to expand as we branched out in every direction. Over the past decade, connective areas explored have been as far east as Long Island, as far south as Winslow in NJ, and Wilmington in DE, beyond the Susquehanna River in PA to the west, and the Catskills of NY to the north.
Activities began also to branch more into volunteer opportunities like trail maintenance and construction in addition to the weekly hikes.
By 2008, discontinued posting through other organizations causes a spike in participation, but the hikes continued regardless.
It was decided early on that the group should file for non profit status, but busy schedules and lack of motivation deterred that from happening for many years.
Following the formal organization of METROTRAILS, hike participation soared beyond prior numbers.
We continue to gather at least once a week to cover 15+ mile routes all over the tri-state area.
