Kingston to High Falls NY Rail Trails and More!

Join us for an outstanding point to point hike between High Falls and Kingston, mostly using old railroad rights of way, a total of about 16 miles.
We will make this one our next theme hike! Those who got one of the black tuxedo jackets on the recent Buckettfest hike, BRING IT! I have a few more small ones for $2 each. Everyone else, if you want in on the silliness, wear a back jacket! This is going to be a lot of fun!

High Falls

Meeting point will be at the High Falls parking lot in High Falls NY, which is just east of the bridge over the Rondout Creek, at following coordinates:

Lattitude: 41°49'43.66"N

Longitude: 74° 7'56.83"W

The hike will take us mostly along scenic rail trails, a lot of which is the Hurley Rail Trail.  There will also be a little bit of road walking along mostly pleasant back roads, but a little along the Kingston waterfront.

End of the Line

This promises to be an outstanding route with constantly changing scenery. We will be along the Hudson, the Rondout Creek, along abandoned track still in place as trail, a bit of the streets of Kingston, then along rail trail in town and then through pastoral settings and mixed hardwood forests on the way to High Falls, which is a lovely site on the creek at our end point.

Google maps is your best friend for interstate public transit. It looks like you can fairly easily subway to penn station (F train). From there catch the nj coast to secaucus and transfer to bergen co line. Arrive at passaic at about 7am. I was thinking about attempting this but would have to spend at least a few hours early am in Penn station... generally not somewhere you want to be at 4-6 am.

There is a bus to Kingston...it sort of goes near to where we'll be...just can't have too many taking that option or car shuttles won't work!

ALSO: We're going to make this our next theme hike! Anyone who wants to get in on the silliness, I think this is a good one to do in full suits or formal wear! Who's in with that??
    I'll be doing it!

    1 · March 10, 2014

    • Michael H.

I'll try to wear something somewhat silly, buuuut it's going to be pretty cold, so I think I just might go with something heavier!

Looks like there are lots of carpoolers along the GSP route ... anyone around the Route 287 route? I can pick up one or two, must like FlipFlop

    March 11, 2014

    • Susie D

Okay I'm picking up someone at Pancheros Mexican Grill on Route 206 Bedminster, exit 22A off Route 287. I can pick up one more person there who likes dogs.

Since there seams to be several people who want to car pool im going to suggest these options: for people comming up the parkway we can meet at campmore on rt 17north and travel together from there or for people traveling on 287 we can meet in mahwah at the office "skyscraper" please let me know if either options will work . If i drive i can fit four. Since its too far for me to drive alone i will cancel by friday if no one responds .

Jack who likes Oud and Eggplant should drive right by Campmore, maybe he can pick you up. Good luck.

I'll be meeting Angela at Fort Lee. There is a Sheraton around where I-87 meets with I-287 and Route 17 in Mahwah with plenty of parking if you or anyone else wants to carpool up from there.

I have some great news to add for this posting: The mile road walk section at the end HAS BEEN ELIMINATED, as the rail trail now extends all the way to High Falls! We will experience the waterfront and the road section at the beginning, tracing as closely as possible the historic rail route, then get on the rail trail system that will take us directly to the end! I'm very happy for this!

is there a train that i can take that someone can get me from? i prefer that to coordinating rides. please let me know? thanks ;)

    March 9, 2014

    • Michael H.

There's not really any good public transportation to the end point of this hike. It's pretty much middle of nowhere. Kingston has a bus station, but it's not directly on the route.

If anyone can swing by Union CO, NJ (less than 5 min from Parkway 138) let me know! I could also take the Raritan Valley train to meet someone in Westfield, Plainfield, etc. This sounds like an awesome hike!

See below, there are a few people trying to coordinate carpools!

Pick up by the George Washington Bridge around 178th or 179th Streets or New Jersey, Fort Lee is also good places...
