"I'm Spiritual, But Not Religious"

  • September 26, 2013 · 7:00 PM

There seems to be a trend in which people, when asked if they practice any particular religion, reply with "I'm spiritual, but not religious." But what exactly does this mean? What is the difference between religion and spirituality? Concurrently, society is becoming less and less religious. Is this a good thing? What role does religion really play in a society, and how are people different with religion as opposed to without it? This and more will be discussed. Come join us!

I'll bite Alain :) I'll start by saying that spiritual and religious have similar and vague definitions. But popular standards are that religious means you belong to a group, typically Islam, Christianity or Judaism and believe in the god of Abraham and other supernatural events/entities. Spiritual means you don't believe in the bible or the god of Abraham but in some supernatural force. Both share the fact that they believe in evidence less claims. So for me, if one were to claim they were spiritual but not religious they are just trying to create a boundary between themselves and the horror that is organize/Abrahamic religion and still keep the delusions of supernatural forces and dogma. However both require the suspension of logic and reason and therefore are one in the same. When people ask me if I think there is anything out there "bigger than me?" I always "I'm 5'1, lots of things are bigger than me. But I don't believe in anything without evidence".

I am thinking, about how, I should express my feelings about this. I say feelings, because, it is such a personal one. Yet, I am thinking to. :-)

I was not a member of the group therefore I missed this event. Having said that, I've had this very same subject on my mind and I've decided that I'm not willing to miss out on this conversation here. I'll post some questions I've been entertaining and some of my thoughts. Hopefully some of you will find them interesting and it will spark the conversation back up

This term (spiritual but not religious) is everywhere. I think it has become a meme of sorts. I hear people say it all the time. I see it as a category on sites. (ie atheist, christian, and "spiritual but not religious). I've even begun to use it myself.

What does it mean? what is one intending to communicate when saying it? What is understood by it? Yes of course it all depends, but, is there a certain core or essence commonly held? Why is the "not religious" in there? Do some people want to distance themselves from the extremism/fundamentalism that is all over the news? finding myself very annoyed by this character limit.

Michael Crichton wrote and directed, a classic called WestWorld.
A futuristic Sci-Fi thriller about robots, and humans.
The late Yul Brunner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin, starred in this movie. They made a second one two, but it is the first one, you would want to see. Then the second one, I don't remember to much about that one ? I have to say, it really spooked me, and got me thinking.... ?

If you all have a chance, rent it.

    Can we try for Lesters?

    1 · September 19, 2013

    • Melissa

Hey, I'd rather not change the venue at this point. I chose Moloko again because last time Lester's changed their calendar, which is why we had to scramble for a new location at the last minute, and I didn't want to risk it a second time. What I can do is contact them to see if we can actually have the event put on their calendar for next month, so we can avoid that situation from happening again.

This topic is of interest to me. I'm starting a new job and not sure what my schedule will be. If at all possible, I look forwarding to being there.
