Marche du Nain Rouge

I know you probably never heard of this Detroit event before...Neither had I. However, this event began in 2010 and the 2013 Parade is set for this Sunday at 1 PM in midtown. In a nutshell, Marche du Nain Rouge is a Mardi Gras style parade that invites revellers to banish the malevolent "Nain Rouge" (red dwarf) from the city for another year...Neo-Paganism Detroit style! The parade is along Cass Ave between Canfield and Temple streets. Approximately 3,000 costumed revellers are expected to participate in this colorful extravaganza! If you're still looking for interesting people pics for this months photo challenge, this would seem to be the perfect event. I would expect many of the participants in this event to be more than willing to ham it up for the camera! This should be fun, it will definately be interesting! After the parade we can get together for lunch and beverages at a local pub, many of which will be offering "Nain Specials."

SHOOTING TIPS: Parades are always a challenge to shoot. It's very different than just standing and watching the parade and taking an occassional snapshot...If you want to get GREAT shots you have to be fluid and move with the parade. This starts before the parade even begins. Try getting closer to the staging area for the parade...Candid shots in the staging area can be quite interesting...Also, by shooting before the parade begins, you're already "warmed up" once the action starts! It also gives you an idea as to what to expect once the parade begins...Working your way along the parade route gives you opportunities to shoot the crowd of parade-watchers...Once the parade is finished it's easy to approach costumed paraders and ask for posed shots. Equipment-wise I would travel light...One camera body and a good travel zoom lens...Tripods are not necessary and will only get in the way...I'd bring along an off-camera flash...Try under exposing the shot and using fill flash for your subject...One of my favorite techniques at an event like this is to get creative with my white balance as well...Cool down the overall white balance and use a warming gel on your flash to illuminate your subject with warm light...Gives a great effect! Good walking shoes are always a good idea!

Fun event although tough to photograph with so many people crowded together. Glad I went though!

Was the band actually playing? This looks like so much fun that next year I want to either play with the band or take photos.

A lot of interesting faces and music. Worth going downtown Detroit and see how much life there is down there. A good feeling.

You can follow them on Facebook. I too was planning to go so it'll be fun to meet up with the group. I'm hoping Honest John's will have something going on to celebrate this event.

Tentatively yes. We will already be in the downtown area Sunday morning. A little coordination may be in order. Looking forward to it. would this be a tripod/ tripodless occasion?

    March 22, 2013

    • JACK C.

Hi Marie! I would think tripod-less...I would consider bringing an off-camera flash as well...
