Pictured Rocks & Fall Color 2013

This meetup will be based in Munising, MI. Munising is approximately 7 hours north of Metro Detroit on Lake Superior. This meetup is scheduled for three days Friday morning through mid-day Sunday... Munising is home to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Hiawatha National Forest, and many, many other beautiful sites! We should have a great chance at finding amazing fall color at or near peak. We held a meet-up here last fall and had a great time! We only scratched the surface of what to shoot here in the fall last year...It's simply not possible to do it in one season! That said, many beautiful memories and photos were made here last year! We will visit some of the same sites from last fall (every year it's different!) and some new ones as well. This meet-up will be a series of hikes/walks (nothing strenuous or too terribly far from the parking lot) over a three-day weekend at various locations I've already scouted out. Itineraries will depend upon color status and weather conditions. THIS AREA IS VERY BEAUTIFUL AND IT WOULD TAKE EFFORT TO NOT MAKE BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS. Light snow is even a possibility and can only enhance the opportunity for beautiful scenery! FURTHER DETAILS REGARDING THIS MEETUP WILL BE FORTHCOMING SHORTLY...

I will be in the UP from late September through mid-October and will be conducting a four-day workshop in the Keewenaw Penninsula and the western and central UP prior to the Munising meet-up. Highlights will include Lake of the Clouds and the Porcupine Mountains, Hancock/Houghten, Copper and Eagle Harbors, Lake Superior beaches, many, many waterfalls, and some very beautiful lighthouses, etc...Workshop details will be published shortly.

Was the natural extension to the previous week of shooting in the wonderful world of the Upper Peninsula. A great group of friends and photographers make for wonderful experiences and our organizer makes for fantastic photographic opportunities. As stated though, those that RSVP and don't show are restricting the ones who actually would show up, so if you are not certain don't RSVP simple.

Mike - I agree - great outing with a bunch of awesome people who showed up for this event. For those who did not show up, see Mike's comments: "RSVP courtesy at MPA events" in the "Discussions" tab. Emphasis is needed to cancel the RSVP for events when you do not plan to show up, to allow others on the waiting list to attend. In this case six more people could have come off the waiting list to join the group this last weekend! Ouch!

I just read in the Free Press that Pictured Rocks is one of the parks closed by the governement shutdown. You may want to keep an eye on the status of the park this week.

Just found out I can't make it (work just booked me for that weekend) and changed RSVP.

I might head up on my own some other time since I really wanted to go. Any suggestions on where to head to on my own?

The pick of the colors depends on the year, usually it is around Oct 4 around Porcupines and Oct 8 around Munising.
Places to visit: Tahquamenon fall, all around Munising (there are a lot of beautiful waterfalls, you can get info in the Munising info center), Bond falls, Seney wild life refuge, Porcupine mountains including Lake of the clouds.
I would advise to take a sunset Pictured Rocks boat tour. It you have time, make a walk to Chapel Rock from the parking lot in the forest, continue to the Mosquito beach and return. The whole loop is 9.2 miles.
Also there is very interesting path to the shore from the Beaver lake (Little Beaver Lake Rd).
Also the Palms Brook state park (Big spring) is very interesting, but not for pictures.
I can give more detailed descriptions, but I need to show that. If you live close to me (13Mile Rd & Greenfield, Southfield, you can stop by). If you are interested, I'll give my phone number.

    Just for fun:

On da first day God created da Upper Peninsula.

On da second day He created da partridge, da deer, da bear, da fish, & da ducks.

On da third day He said, "Let dere be Yoopers to roam da U.P."

On da fourth day He created da udder world below.

On da fifth day He said, "Let dere be trolls to live in da world down below."

On da sixth day He created da bridge so da trolls would have a way to get to heaven.

God said it was good and... On da seventh day He went huntin.

    Just for the information.
Consider not only hotels/motes, look for cabins, it could be better and cheaper. or example, Otter Lake lodge & campground. It is located near Munising on the Buckthorn Rd. Once we stayed there, it was very good.
Me and my wife will spend one week in U.P. in Camel Rider's resort. It is located on M13, approximately 20 minutes from Munising. Location is gorgeous. I booked it for $424 (with tax) for 9 days from Sept. 27.
May be we can see each other over there. I've been to U.P. many times and can give some extra info.
