June 2013 Photo Challenge: Outdoor Night Photography

The theme this month is Outdoor Night Photography. Don't overthink this...If the sun has set below the western horizon and not yet risen in the east, then it's night! If you're not indoors then by definition you're outdoors! Just get out at night and shoot! Subject matter is up to you! Star-filled skies, city lights, long-exposure landscapes are all possibilities! Be safe, be creative and have fun!

DO NOT SUBMIT PHOTOS CREATED BEFORE 1 JUNE 2013...ALL PHOTOS MUST BE CREATED THIS MONTH...The idea behind these Monthly Photo Challenges is to spark our creativity in the here and now...I hope we all can use these Monthly Photo Challenges as inspiration to create new beautiful photos!

Does anyone have any good tips for night photography? Night photography isn't one of my strong points BUT I'm going to try!

I use a Tripod and shutter release cable. If you don't have a cable, set camera on shutter self timer. Also if your feeling a little more adventurist, weight down tripod and set camera to mirror lock-up. Personally I shoot night time in manual mode (aperture and shutter speed) also manual focus. My camera and most digital cameras have a hard time judging these in the dark. I like to start things with my ISO set to[masked] and set aperture to f5.6 to f11 somewhere in the middle of the lens I'm using (i love using my nifty 50 for night shoots) If you shoot with a max aperture the lights in the background will have that star look. The same goes with a long of a shutter speed. (sometimes this effect looks pretty cool) For the shutter speed, I just play with it. My camera will shoot to 30 sec. and can be placed on B (bulb) I like adjusting my shutter speed on camera because it records the time of exposure but doesn't in B mode. If shooting fire works you want to shoot B.
