FREE Saturday Evening Ann Arbor Photowalk and Photo Scavenger hunt

Congrats! You have a new camera! Now what? At first, it can all seem so confusing ...shutter speeds, apertures, white balance, composition, etc... Where to begin? How to proceed? Is my gear good enough? Do I need to buy anything else? Where and what should I shoot? The questions can be overwhelming! I have found that one of the best and fastest ways to learn is to get out in the field with someone that knows what they're doing and to observe them in action, mimic their techniques and ask lots of questions. Saturday Evening Photowalks aim to provide that experience in a small group setting. Join professional photographer Thomas Nighswander for a fun and informative stroll in a variety of interesting locations right in Ann Arbor and get to know your camera inside and out. Bring your camera, a tripod if you have one, and your camera manual. I know, reading a camera manual can be torture...But they really do contain important information and can help Thomas help you get started the right way! Each monthly Photowalk will last approximately two hours and is limited to a small number of new photographers. By keeping the size small, we're able to keep track of what each of us is seeing and shooting and our discussions can be shared by all in attendance. Thomas will get you off the "auto" and "scene" modes and have you making truly creative photos in no time at all! Our philosophy is to keep it as simple as possible...By eliminating the distractions that needn't be worried about, you'll be free to concentrate on those things that do matter! Join Thomas Saturday evening and get started making beautiful photos!

Are we just posting our images when we're ready, or is there going to be a folder for them?

Also when we meet at 5pm I will break people up into groups of 4-6, give you a list of subjects and send you on your way...you will have 1-1/2 hours to find the items on the list working as a team.
The area of interest will be confined to 4 blocks... I will supply a map of the "grid".
After completing your list return to Espresso Royal and check in.
If anyone is interested we could flash mob a local restaurant after...
thanx and as always post any questions prior to Saturday.

Ok so we have 41 people RSVP for this event,I hope that all attend? I just updated the map for Espresso Royal Coffee on State st.
If you are not familiar with the meeting location it is across from the diag and kitty corner from the State theater on the west side of State st. North University st. dead ends in front of the coffee shop.
As far as parking you can try to find meter parking along State street but I recommend the Maynard st. Parking Structure that is one street west of State st.
Feel free to call me and I can give you instructions for locating us and parking.
I will be out front of the shop wearing a black ProCam hat and bright shirt (probably Hawaiian).
thanx and hope ALL THAT RSVP CAN MAKE IT!!!

Quick question, My husband loves to go with me while I am shooting, he doesn't take photos with anything more than his cell phone. Would he be able to join as a "tag along". If not....it's cool too. Don't want to take the spot from another photographer. thanks

    • Thomas N.

sure he can attend..he just has to carry our gear..lol

I'm in the process of putting together a list of subjects and items to photograph for the scavenger hunt.
So I'm looking for your ideas and input?
I would like to keep the list to around a dozen subjects.

    May 27, 2014

  • Thomas N.

so I lifted the waitlist for these photowalks..also I'm going to add some extra fun to them and put together a "photo scavenger hunt" This will be a list of subjects that groups of 2-4 photogs will capture in there own unique and creative way. We will meet at a set time and place and view the images together. Ideas for subject list is welcome, but the list wont be distributed until the day of the photowalk.

Hi, I'm very excited to be joining your group! I love photography but have felt like I'm at a stand-still because of the finer points (such as getting off AUTO lol) I love taking pictures of birds and trees and leaves... they fascinate me! I look forward to meeting you all and learning along with you and sharing our passion for photography.

    April 16, 2014

    • Thomas N.

Hi Debbie, welcome to our group..yes I can get you of auto and into the finer points of exposures and composition. Birds, trees, flowers, landscape, macro and more are all part of what I teach in my photowalks and and workshops. As always feel free to post any ideas for photowalk or workshops on the Meetup main page.
      Thanx again
      Tom
