Welcome to the Science Party!
The Michigan Science Party, based in Lansing, Michigan, is dedicated to applying the scientific method, empirical evidence, and rational discussion to government. This will be accomplished by group discussion of relatable topics, research into issues, peer review, and finally, petitioning and advisory of legislatures at the applicable level of government utilizing a more personal method of delivery (i.e. physical mail, phone calls, or even face-to-face meetings).
Members may bring up any topic they feel relevant to group discussion at any time. Meetups will be scheduled as requested by the members of the group, with minutes recorded as necessary to disseminate to members unable to attend. Location and time of the meetups is open to discussion to ensure maximum participation. Although the group is based in Lansing, members from all over the state are welcome to schedule meetups more convenient for them.
A topic discussed may then be dissected by members on their own time, with the goal of developing a cohesive, understandable study of the topic using empirical evidence and the scientific method to determine a proper course of action. Though there is no set layout for topic papers, a good argument set in an understandable way can go a long way in influencing policy decisions.
The study will be published for group members on the group facebook page (link at the end of this statement) for review, editing, and further discussion. The study will then be sent to the applicable members of the legislature if needed.
Petitions are also a good way to get messages across to government officials, and are encouraged if enough people can be accessed to sign them. Petitions are encouraged to be hand-signed and sent by mail for a more personal touch, but there is nothing wrong with an e-petition either.
Members are encouraged to recruit individuals interested in science, politics, philosophy, etc, with emphasis on recruiting experts in the various fields related to legislation (Law, Education, Environment, Economics, or other). All people are welcome to join the group and contribute to the group in whatever way they like. Any member is free to make suggestions related to group direction or methods for achieving group goals.
Questions, concerns, comments, or suggestions may be given to the group organizer, Zachary Sokolowski, through email or facebook. This will hopefully be a collaborative, fruitful endeavor and a step in the direction of a scientifically literate, rational government that is a force for good in the community they represent. Once again, welcome to the Science Party!
