Snowshoe Sleeping Bear

I read about this and thought it would be a cool event to suggest.

A Park Ranger will personally lead snowshoe hikes throughout the National Lakeshore every Saturday this winter. The first hike starts on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Enjoy snowshoeing in a winter wonderland of forests, fields, beaches and historic sites. Look for fresh tracks in the snow, learn about the lives of the people that settled this area, and breathe some fresh winter air. Meet at the National Lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire. If you donot have your own, snowshoes will be loaned out at no charge. Should there not be enough snow for snowshoeing, Park Rangers will still lead interpretive hikes each Saturday throughout the winter.

Inside the Visitor Center, Park Rangers will first provide basic snowshoeing instructions and then everyone will travel by car to the trailhead or area of the National Lakeshore pre-selected for that day. Once there, the Park Ranger will help participants learn about the park’s unique features and winter’s effect on them by exploring and discovering clues on site. Be prepared and plan to be outside until about 3:00 p.m. Dress in layers and wear waterproof boots to be most comfortable.

Not only is snowshoeing easy, fun, and good exercise, it is also an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The Park Ranger-led hikes are mildly strenuous, but proceed at a leisurely pace for approximatelyone and a half miles.

Since the National Park Service has a supply of snowshoes for use within the National Lakeshore, participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. Reservations are highly recommended. Park Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are limited to 30 participants.

For more information and to make reservations, please call Lisa Griebel at[masked], ext. 301 or email [masked]. Call the National Lakeshore at[masked], extension 328. HEAD'S UP folks, Lisa Griebal can only accommodate 7 (SEVEN) of us, and she is going out of her way to do that. She even has a waiting list but is putting an additional 3 of us into the event, which is really nice of her.

So, please, let's get clear about who is really hoping to attend.

If you recently RSVP'd a "yes" then please contact Lisa at the phone number above, to ask her for space. Use my name for the reservation. Since I'm not attending, I'm getting a little tuckered out with all the planning!!!!!!

I just heard back from Lisa Griebel. My original reservation (on our behalf) was for 4. Even though they are overbooked, Lisa says she is willing to add 3 more to my reservation. So now there is room for a total of 7. I cannot attend. Please - anybody who wants to go - AND ANYBODY WHO HAS CHANGED THEIR MIND AND DOES NOT PLAN TO GO - put it in the RSVP. I don't think she can accommodate more than 7 of us!

Keep in mind the NATIONAL Park pass are good for any National Park only. These are United States issued. We have three in MI. They are around $30.00 (so worth it if you visit them), or they have daily passes for $10.00. Still a good deal especially if you think you won't be viviting Nat'l Parks more than one or two times throughout the year.

OKAY PEOPLE! I've taken over the reins from Doyle (thanks Doyle)! I called the National Lakeshore and FEB. 16 is NOT available. They are filled up. THEY DO HAVE ROOM ON FEB. 23RD so I made a reservation for 4 under my name. So......anyone who wants to go should notify me, here, and I will add you in. If we get more than 4 of us, hopefully I can add more. I was told that there is lots of spots available on the 23rd so far.

    SO.....TO REVIEW.....SOUND THE TRUMPETS!
Feb. 23rd, 1 - 3 pm, free if your car has a pass on it, otherwise you will have to buy one, I think they run about $35, and they are good for any Michigan park, they come in very handy. Warm hiking boots and Xcountry boots fit showshoes well - they rent them out for free. Other sturdy winter boots are fine, too.

SO COME ON PEOPLE! I JUST JOINED THIS GROUP! LET'S MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN!

I'm pretty sure that you need a Sleeping Bear Nat'l Lakeshore pass, NOT a a state park pass.

Given most who said they would go but can't make 2 Feb I changed the date. Hopefully that will work better. Given I won't be there and merely suggested this event it would work best of one of the participants made the arrangements.

Any suggestions how I can add my snowshoe and sculpture black and white photo workshop as an event on Feb 2 & Crystal Mountain?

    January 14, 2013

  • Doyle

I need to clarify my post. As much as I would love to attend this I am not in the area for the foreseeable future and not able to participate. I came across the article and thought others might want to do this. I guess I could set a date and leave it up to the member to decide if they want to show up or not.
So I am proposing Saturday 2 Feb as the date. Time: 1pm and it looks like it is not negotiable.
That's a couple of weeks to arrange/rearrange schedules.
Meeting place: The Philip A. Hart Visitor Center located on M-72 just east of the intersection with M-22 in Empire, MI.
Someone attending should call and reserve a slot as the article suggests you reserve a slot. The article above provides plenty of info on what you'll be doing and what you'll need.
How about the first person who signed up (Jennifer)?

February 2nd wouldn't be good for me. I volunteer at a snow shoe event. I was going to post something for Sun Feb 3rd. there is an event but it's for women only. I had heard of snow shoeing at the Dunes. Do you know if they have this every Saturday or if there was someone I could call.

      January 10, 2013

    • Doyle

From the article these events are only on Saturday with a hard start time of 1PM. If you can't make the 2nd suggest a new date and that's what it will be.
