George Washington National Forest! A Strenuous 9.2 Mile Kennedy Peak Loop!

If you are a “Sweeping View” kind of hiker this one is for you: a 9.2 mile circuit hike on Massanutten Mountain. There are views as you both ascend and descend the ridge as well as at the focal point of the hike, Kennedy Peak. From there you get an unobstructed view of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains to the east. On a clear day you can almost see Front Royal to the north. The main difficulties are the 1100 foot elevation gain over 2.5 miles as you climb from the valley to the peak itself.

Hike Pace
This hike will be led at a moderate pace which is that of an average hiker which is about 2.5 mph.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

See you there and please take my number with you just in case...

I'll be at Centreville Park and Ride at 7AM and can take three. However, I need to return directly after the hike. IE, I can't stay for any post-hike meal, etc.

    Hi all,

Looking forward to hiking with you on Sunday. This is a strenuous hike, so please be prepared. Since this is a full hike with a waiting list, please be considerate and update your RSVP if you are unable to attend so someone else can sign up. Big thanks to Brian who joined as a hike leader which allowed us to open up some extra spots. There will be a couple pace options for this hike since we’ll have two leaders; both of us tend to be on the faster side of moderate but the pace options will depend on the groups’ preferences when we divide up at the trailhead. We don't leave any hiker behind :)

Parking is very limited at the trailhead, so we strongly encourage carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles. Also be aware that cell phone coverage is unlikely at the trailhead.

Let us know if you have any questions. This will be a beautiful hike - see you Sunday!

If anyone is coming from the South, I am driving from Staunton, VA and could pick someone up.

    April 25, 2013

  • Brian Crowe

Parking is limited in GWNF including this hike so please if possible carpool with each other to cut down on our number of vehicles, thanks.
