PSP Hike! Granite–Woodstock Area with Lunch On the Trail! A 6-8 Mod. Mile Hike!

Patapsco Valley State Park Hike and Picnic! This Hike Has it All!

Enjoy the Granite-Woodstock Area Trails! A Moderate 8 Miles With An Easy 6 Mile Bailout Option Plus A Picnic Lunch On the Trail!

Post Hike Libations and Camaraderie at
The Woodstock Inn!

A remote area that truly is a hidden gem! We will make a loop in a section of Patapsco Valley State Park on trails that take us over moderate, yet rewarding, terrain. While many developed areas inside Patapsco Valley State Park provide amenities for family outings, camping, and picnics, lucky for us the state park also offers huge tracts where you’re on your own as we will enjoy today. Since the area for this hike runs through unmaintained areas of the state park, it promises solitude, peace, and wildlife.

Trail Information
Nearby City: Woodstock, MD
Length: About 8 total miles with an easy bailout at about 6 miles.
Elev. Gain: 1040 feet: Take note this is the elevation GAIN and not indicative of the elevation CHANGE on the hike. There are lots of ups and downs on this hike but it is still on the easier side of moderate because of it's short distance and none of the hills are very challenging.
Trail Type: Loop
Skill Level: Moderate
Season: Year-round

Trail Notes for Leaders

Hike Pace

Large groups really take away from the hiking experience. This hike will be led at moderate pace of about 2.5mph (pace of an average hiker). Please sign up for another hike if you know that this is not a comfortable pace for you.

Weather Information
We hike rain or shine! Click here for up to the minute weather information for the trailhead

Directions to Trailhead

Click here for directions to the trailhead.

Meetup Time is at 10:30 a.m.

Optional Post Hike Get Together!

We will have optional post hike get together at the Woodstock Inn. Click here for more information about The Woodstock Inn, including it's menu to help you decide if you will join us for fun and comraderie with the group! Click here for the pub's address and directions but we meet up just across the street from the Inn so no worries about getting there post hike.

Leashed Fido is Welcome on This Hike!

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Let's have good times and see you on the trail!

PLEASE take the leaders phone number with you in case you have any difficulty locating our group...

I thought someone said it was not supposed to rain until midnight!

That is my fault. Sorry about that. I think I accidentally requested the rain for 12pm when I meant 12am. Argh:)

It's alright. Next time I'll bring a rain coat, regardless of the weather forecast :)

Thanks to Keith for leading a great hike, and thanks to Brad for his vigilant sweeping and waiting up for a few of us late-comers.

    Christine, "Chapeau" as usual.

Beautiful hike -- Keith did a great job, giving us a bit of history and other information along the way, as he always does so well. We lucked out on the weather -- rain held off until I was driving back to DC, and this is the first hike I've been on with Keith that we haven't slogged through muddy trails. Interesting and fun group of people on the hike. Next time, I want to do it on horseback -- should be a different perspective.

That's strange. There were 23 people signed up for this hike, an odd number. Then I get an email telling me there is room (because I was wait listed & someone dropped out). But when I log in, now it shows only 20 people signed up, but there are still no openings. Apparently the maximum size for this group is variable (?).

Thanks for your response Christine. Carpooling from Tyson's corner mall works. I just registered for this hike with one guest. So there will be 2 of us coming in the carpool.

Christine - Thank you for your message. I am still recovering from a flu and I am unsure yet if I will be able to join for this hike. When is the latest I should let you know by? Apologize for any inconvenience.

Hi Christine, I am certainly feeling better but not as fit to do a 6/8 mile hike just yet. :( My husband and I will join on some other hike soon enough. You all have fun!

Please note that all dogs must be on a leash at all times for their safety and in consideration for the safety and comfort of others. Also note that we will leave as scheduled. Prudence requires you to add at least 20% to Google's and MapQuest's estimated travel times to avoid disappointment. Bring a map or a GPS if you're geographically challenged. IYLYOYO.

I have never hiked with the Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group before. I would like to know if there is any car pool facility available to the hike place and back. I live in Arlington, VA. Thanks.
