Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail: Turkey Run Park to Roosevelt Island! A Moderate to Easy Side of Strenuous 9 Miles with Rock Scrambles!

Fairfax and Arlington counties are the close-in home of a far-out trail endowed with river views, touches of wilderness, waterfalls, rock scrambling, relics, and solitude.

Here is your chance to both sample the second longest trail east of the Mississippi river (after the AT) and experience what proselytizer Bruce Glendening calls “one of the best urban-area hikes east of the Mississippi.” The sample consists of the 9 mile long Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT) secreted in the George Washington Memorial Parkway’ broad right-of-way along the Potomac River between the Capital Beltway and Theodore Roosevelt Island. This is a 9 mile hike with about 1,300 feet of elevation change including a front-end piece of Turkey Run and there can be some muddy places so hiking boots are recommended. This is not a sneaker hike.

Hike Meetup Time is 9:30 a.m. to shuttle to the start of hike.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which helps ensure that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Fido is Welcome on This Hike Only with Leader Approval due to Rock Scrambling. Please contact the leader so you can make an informed decision about bringing your dog.

Let's have good times and see you on the trail! PLEASE take a leaders phone number with you in case you have any difficulty locating our group!

I wanted to provide a "shout out" and recognition to Marianne: she was phenomenal with our hiker and a great first responder! Christine was awesome in alerting me too!
We all had a good time as a group, but this hike has an elusive element to it if the hikers do not keep up with water, electrolytes, and food (fuel).

There won't be a physical address off of the George Washington Parkway, but your GPS may give you the option for the Theodore Roosevelt Island Park (National Park). Also, it's a short walk from the Roslyn metro to the island (about 1/3 of a mile); you will have to ask for directions if you are unsure.

Hoping they do. We really need more leaders. Everyone, take a look at what it takes to join our leadership team and if just a few more people could step up and lead we would not have wait lists, yay! Here is the link http://www.meetup.com...

Tim or Bill - I have signed up for the hike, but did want to bring my dog Lucy. She is an experienced hiker as well, but light enough to assist with her harness if necessary. Is it ok to bring her with me?

    May 18, 2013

  • Bill M.

Everyone, the hike will end at Roosevelt Island parking lot. In the past, we've met at Roosevelt Island and then picked a few vehicles to transport everyone to the starting point. Once we finish the hike other drivers bring ppl who shuttled everyone to the start back to their vehicles at the starting point parking. The starting point parking lot is too small to hold all of our vehicles.
Vi, I'm not sure if I'm taking my motorcycle but could offer a ride on bike (or if inclement weather, my van).
