Susquehanna 29.6 Mile Supported Super Hike!

On September 7, 2013, the Keystone Trails Association is proud to sponsor the Susquehanna Super Hike, a 29.6 mile hiking/trail runner challenge event for adventurous hikers and trail runners on the scenic rolling river hills of the lower Susquehanna Gorge.

This daunting hike and trail run on the Mason-Dixon and Conestoga Trails alternates breathtaking vistas with steep descents into dark, scenic hollows followed by strenuous climbs to the next vista. Prepare yourself for the steep hills, rocky terrain and deep ravines of the Susquehanna Super Hike, an arduous, undulating and challenging course.

Although the Super Hike is a supremely challenging timed event, the challenge is not to "win" or "come in first", but to finish the hike in one day. For many participants, the Super Hike is the ultimate test of physical fitness and mental toughness. "Winning" is the personal satisfaction that comes with finishing the hike in the allotted time.

The event course will traverse both sides of the Susquehanna River in York and Lancaster Counties. The Super Hike will begin at 7:00 AM at the Otter Creek Campground on Rt. 425 in York County and mostly follows the Mason Dixon Trail south to the Norman Wood Bridge. From there it connects with the Conestoga Trail, crossing the bridge and continuing north while paralleling the Susquehanna River. It finally finishes at the Pequea Creek Campground, one mile east of the village of Pequea in Lancaster County.

Just a few of the highlights include Urey Overlook, Oakland Run, historic Lock 12, crossing the Susquehanna River on the Norman Wood Bridge, Kelly’s Run, the Pinnacle Overlook, Tucquan Creek, House Rock Vista and Wind Cave. In this timed event, runners will release through the starting gate ahead of the hikers.

Participants are required - for safety reasons - to reach each checkpoint within a certain time period and to complete the hike no later than 6:30 PM (11 1/2 hours from the start). This requires a minimum pace of almost 2.5 miles per hour for the entire route.

All participants will receive:

• Transportation to the starting point
• A Susquehanna Super Hike t-shirt
• Food and beverages at all checkpoints
• Post-event picnic
• One-year membership to the Keystone Trails Association

Hope to see you on the trail!

Anyone want to trade their Large shirt for an XL? Mine's too big.

I finished in 11hrs 20 min, 10 min to spare. No blisters this time and I did the whole thing in my 5 finger shoes

Congratulations! So glad to hear. My light shoes also worked wonderfully. See you on the slopes.

I used running shoes and applied vaseline to my toes; no blisters at all. I jogged the flats and some of the downs, and walked the uphills and steep downhills - this seemed to work pretty well but the last 7 miles are hard no matter what you do!

This hike, especially the 6 miles from The Pinnacles to Pequea Village, was really tough. I zoomed the first 16 miles in 4.5 hours, but then, with a bad knee, it took 5 hours to cover the last 13.9 miles.

    • Sam S.

Congratulations to both of you. I heartily agree that that 6 miles after the Pinnacles was long and painful. But what an amazing wonderful day.

Hey Kellie, if you get the chance, it would be great if you would also pass on all of our thanks to the Keystone folks regarding the many volunteers who made such a difference. The hike felt very well supported and the volunteers were awesome!

Wow. The course was beautiful, but also really tough in the last 7 miles! The camping was good, too. A few very scenic overlooks. Definitely worth the drive to this very strenuous hike.

I also finished the hike in time. I have 2 huge blisters on the back of the both heels , and one under the big toe:)

Apart from my left foot becoming one big blister, this was an awesome hike. Next year I'm bringing hydropel.

Tyson's Corner is 40 miles SW of Elkridge MD, so it is the opposite direction to the hike. I'd like to camp, but I don't want to drive in Fri traffic. I'll sleep when I'm dead.

Hi all. It is a couple of months away, but please send me a message if you're interested in carpooling to the Super Hike. I'm coming from Arlington. I'm still thinking of camping, but I did call the Peach Bottom Inn, the closest accommodations, which is at: 6085 Delta Rd, Delta, PA 17314. http://peachbottominn.com/

They quoted me $75/night (w/tax) for 2 people (2 double beds), or $86 for 4 people (2 double beds). Send me a message if you're interested in staying at the Inn the night before the hike.

Good grief, there are a lot of participants for this event, considering the challenge. This is so cool. Do you think it's a good idea to alert Keystone Trail Association that we are all members of MAHG? I think it might be great publicity for Mid-Atlantic, because the Susquehanna has become a premier event.
