SNP Fall Waterfalls! Dark Hollow and Lewis Spring Falls! A Mod. 5 Mile Hike!

Shenandoah National Park Waterfalls in The Fall! Dark Hollow and Lewis Spring Falls (Parts on The Appalachain Trail)! A Moderate 5 Mile Hike with Post Hike Meal!

Includes Park Admission: A $15.00 Savings!!

Join us for a visit to not just one, but two of the most magnificent waterfalls in the entire park. Also, parts of this fabulous trek are also on the Appalachian Trail so it doesn't get better than this!

If you have never been on Skyline Drive in SNP, prepare for a dramatic and breathtakingly beautiful drive on your way to and from the Meetup location and the drive to the restaurant if you join us for a fabulous post hike brunch! I suggest allowing time before or after the hike to enjoy some of the pull overs! The drive to the hike is just an appetizer for the main event awaiting you, a hike to two of the most beautiful waterfalls in the entire park, plus a post hike brunch that is a group favorite! So, come on out for good times and camaraderie with the group during the fall colors!

Dark Hollow Falls (Our First Trek)

There's a fine view of the falls from the bottom. The water drops 70 feet, in a series of cascades, over the crumbling greenstone of an ancient lava flow. Thomas Jefferson once stood here and admired the falls. (Jefferson spent a great deal of time exploring these mountains, and studying their plants and animals. He was so fond of the Blue Ridge that at Monticello he put the outbuildings below ground, so as not to interfere with his view of the mountains.)

Lewis Falls (Our Second Jaunt)

Don’t forget the camera, to capture the visual sights along this hike that starts high and stays high for Lewis Falls. When the water is high, Lewis Falls is one of the prettiest falls in the park. There is an excellent viewing platform at the top and an unmaintained trail to an impressive view from the bottom. The circuit also contains a few nice views to the west.

We will be heading down to the Appalachian Trail. Also, the hike passes some most interesting rock features, then joins the Lewis Falls Trail, where it descends to the loud and dramatic fall. Lewis Spring Falls is one of the high-elevation falls at Shenandoah!

Hike Pace

We break down into groups no larger than 15 hikers per leader/sweep team for a more enjoyable experience for all of us and is better for the environment. Large groups really take away from the hiking experience.

This Hike will be led with at both a newbie/social pace and also a moderate option.

Trail Notes for Leaders

Park Fee

FREE Park Admission Today

Many of us have annual passes for Skyline Drive for up to 6 in the same vehicle, so if you ride or meet up at the entrance with someone that has one then it will be free for you to enter the park. Please make arrangement yourselves for this either via email or in the comment section below. The entry fee for Skyline Drive for all vehicles is $15 for a single car so I highly recommend making arrangements to carpool with someone who has a pass, OR, meeting up with one of us who do have a pass near the entrance and ride in with them. Note: An annual pass pays for itself in 2 trips to the park, including this one.

Gear Information Click here for suggestions for what to wear and what not to wear for our hikes.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Please note that our holiday and holiday weekend hikes are not refundable for any reason (including switching hikes, not finding the trailhead, or carpools not working out) due to too many people backing out or changing hikes at the last minute. Sorry, but this is the only way to help make sure that there is a good turnout and our leaders not offer to lead a hike on their holiday in vein...or we will be all become burned enough that we will no longer offer them. Since we have made holiday hikes non-refundable it has boosted attendance rate significantly and often have perfect attendance. Thanks so much for your understanding and I look forward to seeing you out on the trail soon.

Fido is Not Welcome on this Hike Due to Trail Regulations

See you there for good times out on the trail!

Nice to have some of the uphill in the first part of the day instead of all at the end of the day. Great waterfalls. And a chance to call it a day partway through if things aren'y going well.

I enjoyed the day and chatting with friendly people. The hike presented us with examples of care, good judgement, a test of will power and patience. Mike did a great job leading the group.

Absolutely gorgeous day for a hike in SNP. Kudos goes out to Mike! He had a very challenging job leading a very large group of newbies. There were some challenges, but Mike remained calm and pleasant the whole time. I hope he was able to enjoy it. He got a good workout in! Lol

      November 7, 2013

  • Mike

I'm looking forward to this hike; it looks like we will have great hiking weather. We do have a wait list for the hike so just wanted to remind everyone to change your rsvp to no as soon as possible if you realize that you can't go. I can stop by Centreville (or closer in to DC)if anyone still needs a ride.

    November 7, 2013

    • suraj

I think it would make sense to meet at Centreville park before the ride so that most of us can drive all together and wont be left out. Also centreville was designated meeting place i assume.

      November 7, 2013

    • Mike

I will definitely be stopping there, but want to make sure folks without transportation have a ride, too. Marcela, call any time...my voice mail is working again!

  • suraj

Is anyone still offering carpool for this hike?If not, someone closer to Sterling/Centerville area in need of a carpool and willing to share the price for parking and gas?

    November 4, 2013

    • suraj

No, Vienna lies in the opposite direction of my route hence Vienna wont work for me,anyways, thnx for the offer Marcela

      November 7, 2013

    • suraj

Just wondering if anyone is stopping at Centreville park and ride or somewhere closer to this area or not?

      November 7, 2013

  • Bill Y.

I will be driving to the Centerville meeting spot from Arlington, and could pick somebody up at the East Falls Church Metro if they need a lift from there. I should be driving by there around 7:15, and could pretty easily swing through the "Kiss and Ride" lot. Let me know if anybody needs a ride.
