Scouting Hike for Experienced, Adaptable Hikers
If you’re an experienced, adaptable hiker interested in exploring new areas and helping establish new hikes, these scouting hikes may be for you. We’ll have a map, a starting point and an intended route but it will be a new hike for the leader, too. As such, he/she will be taking distance and elevation measurements and writing notes that will slow down the hikes a bit. There may be some backtracking and confusion as published maps and trail descriptions are notoriously vague and/or inaccurate. Not advised for those who want everything to go according to plan.
Unlike other hikes, pre-approval by the leader will be required and we may cancel for inclement conditions. Pre-approval can be obtained by contacting the hike leader via email, telling of your interest and giving the name of one or more MAHG leaders who must vouch for your fitness and adaptability. Please do not sign up before gettng approval. The number of attendees will be limited to a manageable handful. Scouting hikes can be longer or shorter than anticipated, have more or less elevation gain than expected and may encounter unforeseen conditions. That said, scouting hikes are adventurous and fun, increase camaraderie, give you a sense of ownership of the hikes and contribute to the diversity of the MAHG repertoire. Scouting hikes are also excellent training sessions for new or prospective hike leaders.
