Join Us For a Newbie Friendly 4 Mile Sneaker Hike on The Matthew Henson Trail

Matthew Henson is a relatively new Maryland state park. It is a greenway along the Turkey Branch, and one of the major tributaries, of Rock Creek. The park takes its name from arctic explorer Matthew Henson.

Matthew Alexander Henson (August 8, 1866 – March 9, 1955) was an African American explorer and associate of Robert Peary on various expeditions, the most famous being a 1909 expedition during which he may have been the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole.

This stream valley park features a 4.3 mile, 8--foot-wide hard surface trail features 0.6 miles of wooden boardwalk. It is surrounded by parkland, forested area, thousands of trees and shrubs and the Turkey Branch Stream.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

Is anyone going up from DC that I could catch a ride with? I am in in NoMa. I have two small fabulous non-shedding dogs I would love to bring, but can leave them at home also.

    Hikers,
flashlights or headlamp are a must. At least 2/3 of the way will be in the dark. Several of us hiked the trail in the last several weeks; the trail is paved and we did fine in the dark.

    See you tomorrow.

I was wondering about the time since it seems to get dark by 6:30. Do you bring your own lighting?

    1 · October 18, 2013

    • Shmuel

Yes we do. We walk with flashlights or headlamps. We also bunch together, naturally not intentionally, generating a lot of light.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
