Battlefield Weekend Part 1 of 3: Gettysburg National Battlefield

A Newbie Friendly, Easy, and Mostly Flat 9 Mile History Hike

This hike is located about 70 miles from both Baltimore and DC

We are once again offering this customized special Battlefield Weekend Series over the memorial holiday. So please join Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group (MAHG) for one two, or all three powerful history hikes for a most special holiday weekend. We look forward to seeing you there for this annual event

When you’ve finished this hike, you’ll have a comprehensive idea of what took place July 1st through July 3rd, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, when over 150,000 troops clashed on the rolling hills surrounding this small Pennsylvania town. Considered by most historians to be the turning point of the Civil War, it was also one of the bloodiest conflicts in modern warfare. During the three-day battle, there were over 51,000 casualties. Just like the auto and bus tours, this hike visits the important battle sites and monuments; however, the hike leads away from the paved roads and monuments and onto the battlefields. Hikers get a first-hand experience of what it was like for Confederate soldiers to charge through an open field with bullets whizzing by. Let your imagination take over as you position yourself behind a boulder on Little Round Top or walk along a line of cannons.

Gear Information

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Can drive a carpool with up to 3 passengers - pickup at Vienna Metro station, split cost of gas, leaving around 7:15am, from north kiss and ride area. Let me know if you want to ride with me?

    Hi Serindipit,

Can I get a ride from you from the King Street Metro? I live in the Alexandria area, as well. Will be glad to contribute money for gas.

    May 22

    • Bill P.

As I recall, you don't need to pay to basically park at Gettysburg or to tour the Battlefield. The diorama at the Visitor Center does have an admission, if you are interested in going there after the hike.

I need a ride. I can either meet where I live in Silver Spring or can meet at locations near I-270, which is on the route to Gettysburg from Northern Virginia. Call me if you can help.

    • Bill P.

I will be riding with Lance.

I'll PU Bill at 7A at the Leisure World entrance. The suggestion for watching the 1993 "Gettysburg" movie was great as it was filmed on site. See you all soon.

Question for Bill or someone with experience at Gettysburg: I seriously messed up a toe & closed shoes are out. I have sturdy walking sandals that I think will work fine. Agree? Disagree?

    May 23

    • Bill P.

Virginia, most of the surfaces should be fine. There is a a one mile area at Round Top where there is some up and down pitches and looks wild, but the path is actually graded. There will be a 1.5 mile hike through the woods, but I recall the trail being smooth. Lastly, there will be a one mile hike up a meadow following Pickett's Charge. I seem to remember it was well mowed and relatively free of burrs, etc, but I can't swear to it.

Watch out for ticks. I would recommend using "Off" if you plan on walking through fields.

Thanks! I took an extra long weekend & have been hiking. Two ticks yesterday, one today. Good reminder.

I have car pooled from Carderock Recreation area off the Clara Barton parkway for hikes up 270. How about that?

    May 22

  • Bill P.

The hike route is known as the "Johnny Reb Trail" and was put together by the Boy Scouts many years ago. It involves about 3.5 miles along Battlefield roads (car speed limit: 15 mph) and 5.5 miles on fields, forests and hills. We will visit the key areas of the battle, including Cemetery Ridge, Plum Run, The Peac Orchard, The Wheatfields, and Round Top. We will culminate the hike by tracing the path of the fateful Pickett's Charge. We will be exposed to the sun for most of the hike, so please bring plenty of water, along with a hat and sunscreen. There is a restroom at a picnic area 6.5 miles into the hike, BUT NO DRINKING WATER. I highly recommend watching the excellent 1993 movie, "Gettysburg" beforehand. The entire movie is free to watch on UTube:
