Hike, Picnic, and Wine Tasting! Bull Run Mountains Natural Area: 5 or 7 Miles

Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve with Optional Picnic and Wine Tasting at the Winery at La Grange: An Easy Side of Strenuous 5 or 7 Miles

Transition from Moderate to Strenuous Level Hiking

This is a 5 or 7 mile hike that will allow you to see if you are ready to move to more strenuous level hiking. The first 2 miles is a long uphill climb up the mountain on the Ridge Trail. The elevation climb is 674 ft. As a reward, at the top we will go to High Top Overlook for a spectacular view of the VA Valley as pictured just below on the right.

Bull Run Mountain combines the beauty of mountainous woodlands with a rich historical backdrop. Broad Run breaches the mountain at Thoroughfare Gap, and in colonial times it served as a vital passage between Shenandoah Valley farms and the port at Alexandria. Here, too, Civil War troops passed en route to landmark battles at nearby Manassas. Bull Run's wooded slopes and lush cove forests are quieter now, making them ideal for exploring. The Bull Run Mountains Conservancy manages 800 acres of the preserve, and volunteers maintain a network of trails that rise to spectacular west-facing quartzite cliffs, as well as probe the coves where remains of settlers' homes and their cemeteries await the intrepid explorer.

Distance Options

The first 5 miles is a loop that will end up back at the trailhead. If you would like to add an additional 2 miles to your hike, we are more than happy to do another loop of two inside trails.

Post Hike Picnic at The Winery at La Grange

Let's have a Picnic Lunch and Wine at The Winery at La Grange. This is a beautiful winery with lots of seating outside and inside. I have verified they allow you to bring your own food, however, you must purchase the wine from the Winery. If you are going to bring perishable food, please make sure you put it in a cooler with ample ice.

Click Here for the Winery at La Grange web site.

Gear Information

Fido is Not Welcome on this Hike Due to Park Regulations

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

Don't forget to take our numbers just in case!  However, AT&T cell service is not good in this area.
