Join Us For a Newbie Friendly 4 Mile Sneaker Hike on The Matthew Henson Trail

Matthew Henson is a relatively new Maryland state park. It is a greenway along the Turkey Branch, and one of the major tributaries, of Rock Creek. The park takes its name from arctic explorer Matthew Henson.

Matthew Alexander Henson (August 8, 1866 – March 9, 1955) was an African American explorer and associate of Robert Peary on various expeditions, the most famous being a 1909 expedition during which he may have been the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole.

This stream valley park features a 4.3 mile, 8--foot-wide hard surface trail features 0.6 miles of wooden boardwalk. It is surrounded by parkland, forested area, thousands of trees and shrubs and the Turkey Branch Stream.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

It wasn't cold, it wasn't 4 miles and it wasn't boring. The trail had large sections covered with ice and snow. Following the trail had become slow and pointless. We exited to the neighborhood streets with less ice and more miles.

Vince was a real sport. We walked about 6.5 miles while our water froze, but the bodies, legs and faces didn't. Thanks again Vince, I'll do again next week if you come.

The cold will not be a problem provided you dress in layers. Several layers above the waist and two layers below it will keep you toastee. In addition try to cover your face until you warm up. I went out walking on worst days this month and felt fine.

I'm concerned about the bitter cold weather tomorrow, so I canceled. See you this weekend on the trip to National Arboretum.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
