Join Us For a Newbie Friendly 4 Mile Sneaker Hike on The Matthew Henson Trail

Matthew Henson is a relatively new Maryland state park. It is a greenway along the Turkey Branch, and one of the major tributaries, of Rock Creek. The park takes its name from arctic explorer Matthew Henson.

Matthew Alexander Henson (August 8, 1866 – March 9, 1955) was an African American explorer and associate of Robert Peary on various expeditions, the most famous being a 1909 expedition during which he may have been the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole.

This stream valley park features a 4.3 mile, 8--foot-wide hard surface trail features 0.6 miles of wooden boardwalk. It is surrounded by parkland, forested area, thousands of trees and shrubs and the Turkey Branch Stream.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

The trail was under a foot and half of snow and the side streets were icy. Thanks to Tanya and David for braving the elements.

What trail? The whole area is covered by a foot of snow. I'm checking the streets now.

I'll pre-hike the trail before 6:30 PM Tuesday. If the trail is too slippery, there is a safe alternative for us to take.

I would live to attend, but I have a carpooler tomorrow. If you give me an approximate completion time, I may be able to arrange a later pickup time. Thanks. Sheila

Hi there... I would like to start taking advantage of your hiking trips. I looked at the Matthew Henson hike but am wondering about the safety of a 6:30 hike time. Can you tell me anything to alleviate my concerns? Thanks in advance for your help.

We have been hiking every Tuesday on the Matthew Henson trail in the dark for at least 3 months now. We all feel comfortable hiking there and encountered a problem of any sort.

I didn't finish the last sentence: We had no problems.
