Monuments in The Moonlight!

A Very Easy, Flat 4 Mile Social Sneaker Hike! (Metro Accessible)

We ONLY Have This Special Event When the Full Moon Falls On a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and the Moon Will Be Up During Our Event.

This is our very popular Washington DC Monuments by Moonlight sneaker hike, as featured in the Washington Post, focusing on memorials near the Tidal Basin and the National Mall! We will walk for approximately 4 miles, around some of the most scenic and majestic parts of the national capitol Mall.

Join us as we visit each of the city’s famous memorials along with some monuments and more. Including but not limited to: the Washington Monument, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. We will point out fun and interesting facts about each and allow time to enjoy each memorial as well as take some photos. Come enjoy the spectacular majesty of our monuments in the light of the full moon!

Pace Options
We have several paces for you to choose from so there is a pace for you whether you are looking for a photographer (this group WILL stop to expose your lenses so is a TRUE photographer pace, casual/social pace, a more moderate hiker, or even a most brisk hiker. Groups spend the same amount of time at the monuments but the pace between our stops is what varies.

Pace options include:

A social walking pace of about 2.0mph.

About 3 groups of a moderate pace of about[masked]mph which is the pace of an average hikers when we are hiking and used in most hike books as a rule of thumb for determining how long a hike will take.

Last but not least, there will be a very brisk workout pace of[masked]mph. If you sign up for this pace then you asked for it and no complaints as it is not for the faint of hear and is a very fast hike pace.

Please put your pace preference in your RSVP to help us better prepare for this hike and save time at the start!

Weather Information
We walk rain or shine unless there is a 45% or more chance of lightning forecast for the area for the time we will be out on this trek. In this case, I will send an e-mail no later than noon the day of the event. Click here for up to the minute weather information for this trek.

Carpool Information

There are 2 carpools for this hike!

Baltimore Area Carpool
To carpool or caravan from the Baltimore metro area, meet at Dorsey Station. Click here for directions to Dorsey and take note this is not our usual Baltimore carpool location! Use the comment section to discuss carpooling with other members.

Fido is Welcome on This Hike!

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back so no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Let's have great times and see you there! Be sure to take the hike leader(s) numbers listed below with you just in case you have any trouble locating us at the meetup location.

Gorgeous, inspiring evening. Thanks to Toby for leading and commentating; to the RLC (Red Line Crew)--Tristan, Monique, Chris, Toby, and Alicia (Elysia?)--for great companionship and expert navigation to and from the Metro; and to sweepers Gary and Andrew.

I walked with the brisk group and loved it (not to mentioned survived). Thanks Justin!

Andrea, I apologize for the misunderstanding. I absolutely include you and the rest of our social group in the "great companionship" category. The navigation part refers to the adventure on the way back to the metro: searching for the closest Red Line station and not being sure when it closed and whether we would make it there in time. Great to walk with you!

We had a great time and clocked in almost 4 miles. Excellent group of people. Just wish the clouds had cleared about 1/2 hr earlier. Thanks.

Yes, it was wonderful. I've lived in downtown DC for most of the past 24 years, and I've never walked all the way around the Tidal Basin at night (usually just for the cherry blossoms). Great walk!
