Group Walk and Cookout at Centennial Park: Come Enjoy the Sunset and Camaraderie!

Come out and join us for a post hike spring cookout at Centennial park. We will have salad, burgers and hot dogs (chicken or beef) with all the fixin's! Vegetarians, we will have Boca Burgers too. For veggies, we will be grilling zucchini, yellow summer squash, onions, vegetarian baked beans, and if nature is kind to us, red bell peppers. So come on out and enjoy a walk and socialize with the group for some great camaraderie! So come on out and enjoy a walk and socialize with the group for some great camaraderie!

Look for great blue herons, white cattle egrets and little green herons stalking minnows among the reeds. Swallows, turkey vultures and hawks soar overhead, and kingfishers dive into the lake for fish. In summer, turtles sun themselves on logs and rocks. Cottontail rabbits nibble on grass at dawn and dusk. Red fox have been known to visit. A beaver family is building a lodge in the Wildlife Area that is blocked by a buoy line to provide safe spawning for fish and nesting sites for birds. In warm months, look for colorful monarch and swallowtail butterflies and dragonflies among the wildflowers.

    What a great time with a great bunch of folks and excellent food. A shout out to Keith for making the hamburger paddies by hand and to Mike the " Burgermeister Meisterburger" for an excellent job on the grill. The grilled peaches for dessert were especially delicious! Thanks everyone for coming out and joining us for our first cookout of the season and I enjoyed meeting so many new people as well as catching with a few I have not seen yet this spring.

      Nothing better than a burger on the grill!

    Great outing, walk around the lake. Then the cookout. It was nice to have someone cooking for us while we walked. The burgers were great but it did take a long time for the burgers to cook. Very friendly people. I would go again.

    Very enjoyable walk around the lake and BBQ dinner. For next time I recommend a larger BBQ grill though (the one provided by the park is a bit small for large groups).

    Sorry, for the late response but it's a tad far for me to come from Northern Virginia, hit traffic, get home, and then have a 6 a.m. start the next day. Great idea though Kellie!

    Hi. This sounds like fun, do you need any help with the food handling and preparation? I am willing to help. (c;

      Yes and yes. Please update your RSVP if you are bring a guest. We are headed to the store to buy final ingredients around 3 pm so I can prep good at home. As posted in the event description there is indeed veggie burger options plus grilled veggies. Hoping I will be able to find red bell peppers but don't hold me to it because I will only purchase organic, or rather, pesticide free food and preferably local and don't think they have arrived yet but hoping I can locate them somewhere.
