Rockburn Branch Park and Patapsco State Park! A Moderate 5 Mile Hike

A 450-acre park overshadowed by the monstrous nearby Patapsco Valley State Park, Rockburn Branch Park provides a wonderful place to hike with little foot traffic! Due to its proximity to adjacent Patapsco Valley State Park, Rockburn Branch Park often gets overlooked as a hiking destination, but lots of people take advantage of its lack of entrance fee and many amenities.

Today, we will be enjoying both parks in this 5 mile moderate circuit hike. Please not that there are two very minor stream crossings on this hike, but are almost always dried up in late fall and winter.

Please remember we hike the pace of the group and it can vary. We take breaks as necessary and have a guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back for each group of hikers and our guides/sweepers hike in teams which helps ensure that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive and encouraging with no pressure on speed but focus on safety while leaving no trace .

Sorry, but I went down the wrong Montgomery Road, drove all over, asked directions, and arrived too late. Still managed to hike around and see the park.

Nice hike, a little longer than advertised, but it was great weather and a good pace, so no problem. Lots of people out enjoying the trails today.

Are tennis shoes appropriate for this hike?

    July 25, 2014

    • Wayne M.

Hi Marcia. The trails are packed dirt so tennis shoes will work just fine. Last night I was running on these trails with my dog and there were several other people out running so yes tennis shoes will work just fine.

Wayne, can you address the stream crossings for this hike at this time of year? Thanks.

I'll get back to you later, after I've had a chance to checkout the trail.

Hi Mary. I did our hike today. The streams are relatively narrow (the widest is about 5 feet wide) with stones in them so you can cross without getting your feet wet.
