Join Us For a Newbie Friendly 4 Mile Sneaker Hike on The Matthew Henson Trail

Matthew Henson is a relatively new Maryland state park. It is a greenway along the Turkey Branch, and one of the major tributaries, of Rock Creek. The park takes its name from arctic explorer Matthew Henson.

Matthew Alexander Henson (August 8, 1866 – March 9, 1955) was an African American explorer and associate of Robert Peary on various expeditions, the most famous being a 1909 expedition during which he may have been the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole.

This stream valley park features a 4.3 mile, 8--foot-wide hard surface trail features 0.6 miles of wooden boardwalk. It is surrounded by parkland, forested area, thousands of trees and shrubs and the Turkey Branch Stream.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette. We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then please find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing leaving no trace.

It was a great experience for me since I had knees problem which stopped me hiking for a while. The paved path and broad walk are easy for my knees. The whole group of people were friendly .loved it.

Sorry I missed this group. I arrived late and hoped to catch up but didn't. It was a nice trail.

Hi Guys, I am a nondriver and live in NW, DC. Can I meet one of you at a Metro so I can attend this hike? I'd be willing to pay gas of course. Thanks in advance for considering my request.

If interested it is likely best I leave the metro at about 5:20 pm at latest (maybe 5pm is better) due to traffic going into the Rockville area.

Hey Guys, THANKS so much for offering to help, but today is unfolding very unexpectedly so tonight is a no go after all. See you all at any Metro- accessible hikes in the very near future. Have a great one!

I see in the description that dogs are welcome, so I planned on bringing my dog along. If I have misunderstood, please correct me. Thanks!
