Easy Side of Moderate Hike in Leesylvania State Park and Post Hike Meal!

Leesylvania State Park lies on a small peninsula poking into the Potomac River only about 25 miles southwest of Washington.

Leesylvania State Park's trails are short, easy to hike, and most of all fun! You will find a virtual textbook worth of American history along the Lee's Woods Historic Trail. The bluff on Freestone Point was the site of a civil War artillery. There is a quite side to the park as well, a place along Powell's Creek Nature Trail where you can learn the natural story of a small Potomac River tributary.

Its landscape features wooded uplands, wetlands, coastal bluffs, a sandy beach, and hiking trails. Trees and wildflowers flourish, as do deer, beavers, and other four-footed creatures. Fauna watchers, though, mostly prize its eagles, ospreys, ducks, cormorants, and herons. The park picnic area features ½-mile of natural sand beach on the Potomac River. Swimming from the shore is not allowed, but wading is. The park has five hiking trails passing through rich natural and historical features of the Potomac. The park also includes a segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The park boasts many scenic overlooks of the Potomac including one on the remains of a Civil War Confederate gun battery at Freestone Point. The park has a large visitor center featuring historic and nature displays. © Copyright 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Washington, DC Published by Menasha Ridge Press. All Rights Reserved.

Pace Options

We break down into groups no larger than 15 hikers per leader/sweep team for a more enjoyable experience for all of us and is better for the environment. Large groups really take away from the hiking experience for everyone on the trail and not just our group. For this particular hike you have  to choose from so you can hike with others of a similar pace. Paces should be based on your preference but also please know your limitations.

Pace Option 1:   A "social/history" pace. This pace will be about 2.0 to 2.5mph with history stops through Lees Woods.
Pace Option 2:   A moderate pace for current hikers or those who already have an active lifestyle. This pace will about 2.5mph and the pace of most hikers.

Pace Option 3:   A "brisk" pace for more experienced hikers. This pace will about 3.0mph.

Please remember we are a social hiking group that values fellowship and camaraderie and practice good hike etiquette . We take breaks as necessary and have at least one guide in the front in addition to a "sweeper" in the back for optimum safety on the trail, which means that no hiker is left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then find another group! We are very supportive, encouraging, and focus on safety while getting or staying fit on the trail and practicing Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Please take the hike leaders number with you and enjoy the hike!

Thanks everyone for coming out today. We could not have asked for a better January day! This is one of my favorites parks to hike. I enjoyed chatting with everyone. I've also got a new favorite Post Hike Meal place, Waters Edge. I can't wait to go there during the spring/summer so we can sit outside. I hope to see you all again soon. Thank you Steve for being a superb sweeper and for adding the sound affects to our historical jaunt through Lees Woods.
