Join Us for a 2 Night Winter Weekend Adventure!

Hiking or Snowshoeing with Brand New Luxury Cabin Accommodations in Blackwater Falls State Park, WV

Blackwater Falls State Park is located in Davis, West Virginia. It features well over 20 miles of winter hiking and cross country ski trails, as well as a sledding hill and ice fishing opportunities. Some of the more scenic hiking trails lead to Elakala Falls, Pendleton Falls, and the overlooks at both Lindy and Pendleton Point. We will spend the day hiking by the frozen waterfalls and scenic points, and the evening curled up by a roaring fireplace in one of the park's new luxury cabins.

NOTE:  Because of snow conditions, we might need to use either snowshoes or ice cleats such as STABILicers or MicroSpikes to hike the trails.  MAHG has several pairs of loaner STABILicers, a few pairs of snowshoes, and some MicroSpikes to loan on a first come first serve basis for complimentary use, but feel free to bring your own gear.  Cold (as in freezing cold) weather clothing and gear are required.

Blackwater was a Winter Wonderland. We had a great 12 mile hike in the snow with several great overlooks of the Blackwater Canyon and the frozen Blakwater Falls. I was glad to see so many Canadian hemlocks; they are apparently protected from the wooly altegid devastation because of the harsh winters. Several of us went into to town of Thomas where we found great brick oven pizza place, world class beers served out of Mason jars, and the Purple Fiddle which a great, affordable live music venue. Thank you, Kristopher for organizing this.

I can pick up 2 people from Dunn Loring metro (a stop before Vienna) at about 4:15pm on Friday. Katy and Bill, seats are yours if you want them. I've got a Jeep Grand Cherokee so there should be space for 3 and bags.

Help. I need a ride to Blackwater Falls at any time on Friday that is convenient to you. I can easily get to spots in Arlington, Alexandria, Vienna Metro. If need be, I can get to Centreville, but would rather not. Will chip in for gas and can help drive.

    February 20, 2013

    • Katy

Bill - I am also in need of a ride, and can leave from Arlington, Alexandria, or Vienna metro as well. If you find someone, let me know! Problem is earliest possible time I can leave is 2pm because of work.

Hi Kathy - I'm in Arlington & can pick you up at the Ballston metro if you like. I was thinking about taking the afternoon off that Fri and leaving about 1 pm if that works for you.

Ok people, let's get me on this trip! I'm happy to sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag. I would leave after work at 4pm from the Falls Church area... Could pick anyone up at the Dunn Loring metro station as it is headed in the right direction towards WV.
